BankART 1929

横浜の旧市街地の倉庫だった建物をリノベーションしてアートプロジェクトの発信地にしているBankART 1929。と言われても？だったのだけど、実際に行ってみると、広い空間の中にアートの展示空間、バー/カフェ、ショップがあり、美術館のような存在。
11月末まではヨコハマ国際映像祭 CREAMの会場として、広い空間いっぱいに色んな国内外のアーティストの作品が上映されています。映像祭といっても作品の上映時間が決まっているわけではなく、自由に鑑賞可能。
BankART 1929は「すごくちゃんとオーガナイズされている」という言い方は上から目線で失礼かもだけれど、アーティストの支援をしながら、作り手と市民が交流できるような講座を開いたり、夜遅くまでオープンしている素敵バー/カフェがあったり、BankART 1929から出版されたアート関連の本がいっぱいのショップがあったりと、市の施設とは思えない充実ぶりです。その上、若い人を中心にちゃんと人が集まっているというのはすごいこと。
「楽しいことが起こっている」感があって、ものすごく勢いのある場所でした。

BankART 1929 is "a Yokohama City project designed to revitalize the heart of the city by utilizing refurbished historical city buildings for the development of contemporary culture and the arts." I didn't quite understand what it meant, but it is basically a museum-like place with exhibition space, a cafe/bar and a shop.
Till the end of November, CREAM, the International Festival for Arts and Media Yokohama 2009, is held at the site. A lot of short films were shown in the huge ex-warehouse space.
BankART 1929 is a municipal project but is really well organized. The exhibition space holds various exhibitions and events that make locals feel familiar to art and the site as well as supporting artists, nicely designed cafe/bar opens till late at night so locals can drop n for a drink, and the shop provides many art related bilingual books published by the project.
This place has a good vive.

MILK

ショーン・ペンがオスカーを受賞したミルク。ハーヴィー・ミルクのことを何も知らずに見に行ったんだけど、号泣。滝のように涙が流れてきて大変でした。
私は今までゲイの人達の権利を当たり前のことだと思っていたけど、そこに至るまでには長い道のりがあったということを初めて知りました。よく考えてみれば、カリフォルニアでは2008年に同性婚の禁止が再び住民投票で可決されたりと、まだまだ平等とはとても言えない。映画はシリアスな話だけではなく、ミルクがとてもチャーミングに描かれていて、いろんな意味で素晴らしい映画でした。

I went to see MILK, it finally arrived in Japan. I didn't know anything about Harvey Milk but I cried and cried during the film.
I always thought gay right were a matter of course but it took a long hard journey to win their right. The film wasn't only serious, Milk was depicted charmingly. It was one of the best films I've ever seen.

Conversations with Other Women

ハンス・カノーザ監督の『カンバセーションズ』は、デュアルフレームという左右に2分割された画面でストーリーが展開するという、面白い構成です。サルコジ大統領夫人のカーラ・ブルーニの曲も映画の中で使われていました。
何年ぶりかに再会した元夫婦が一夜を共にする、なんとも切ないお話で、主演のアーロン・エッカートとヘレナ・ボナム＝カーターが素晴らしい。美男美女ではないけれど、なぜか魅力的なのでした。

Conversations with Other Women is directed by Hans Canosa. The whole film is shown in a split screen format. And a song by Carla Bruni is used in the film.
The story is about ex-husband and wife who meet each other again and spent a night together. Leading actors, Aaron Eckhart and Helena Bonham Carter were amazing. They are not particularly good looking but had some charm. I really liked this film!

Helvetica

ギャリー・フストヴィット監督によるドキュメンタリー映画Helvetica。フォントのHelveticaについて、スイス、ニューヨーク、ドイツなど世界各地のデザイザーさん達があつく語っています。
いろんな場所で目にするフォントだけれど、映画の中でデザイナーの一人が言っていた「ヘルヴェティカは、氷を入れた冷たく透き通った水のようだ」という表現がなんてぴったりくるんだろうと思いました。映像にも音楽にも透明感があって、色んな意味でヘルヴェティカっぽい感じの映画でした。

Helvetica is a documentary film by Gary Hustwit. Designers around the world were interviewed to talk about the typeface "Helvetica".
Today, we see signs and advertisements written in Helvetica everywhere. One of the designers in the film said that Helvetica was like a clear icy glass of water because it is so clean and refreshing. The film itself was very clear and beautiful just like the typeface.

TOKYO!

ミシェル・ゴンドリー、レオス・カラックス、ポン・ジュノの三人の監督による短篇映画TOKYO!。くせがあるというか、個性的というか、なんだか微妙。監督が自分の分からない言語で映画を撮る、というのはかなりリスクがあるのでは？と思ってしまいました。
でもポン・ジュノ監督の『シェイキング東京』は映像がきれいで、東京の夏の太陽の感じがすごく伝わってきて良かったです。

TOKYO! is a collection of three vignettes by Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, Bong Joon-ho. I still can't work out whether I like them or not. The films reflected the directors' personalities. But it is risky to make a film in a language that they don't understand. It didn't always work.
However, Bong Joon-ho's "Shaking Tokyo" was very beautiful. It captures the feeling of summer in Tokyo really well.

Sex And The City

今日はずっと前から楽しみに楽しみにしていたSex And The Cityの先行上映会へ。期待を裏切らない4人の面白さと、とっても豪華な衣装に150分目が離せませんでした。あんなパワフルでゴージャスな40代になれたら素敵だなぁ・・・。

I went to see Sex And The City today. I have been wanting to see this film for a long time. The four girls were as funny as usual and their dresses were breathtaking. I couldn't even blink for 150 mins! I hope I am as full of life as they are when I turn 40...

チェブラーシカ / Cheburashka

渋谷のシネマ・アンジェリカで上映中のチェブラーシカ。子供向けかなぁと思っていたけど、さすがロシア。奥が深いけれど、とても切なく優しい気持ちになれるアニメーションです。

I went to watch Russian animation Cheburashka at Cinema Angelica in Shibuya. I thought it would be for children at first but it was very deep and meant a lot. I loved all the characters in the animation.

CONTROL

アントン・コービン監督による「コントロール」。ジョイ・ディヴィジョンのボーカル、イアン・カーティスの半生を描いています。フォトグラファーの監督ならではの感覚で、絵になるシーンがたくさんありました。
70年後半のイギリスのファッションや、70年代のイギリスの様子など楽しめました。音楽に興味がある人にとってはたまらない作品なのでは。

CONTROL is directed by Anton Corbijn, a photographer of U2, David Bowie and Björk. The film is about Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division. A lot of scenes had great cinematography.
I am not into music very but really enjoyed the fashion and 70s England. A lot of people recommended this film to me and I can understand why.

My Blueberry Nights

去年からかなり楽しみにしていたウォン・カーウァイ監督のマイ・ブルーベリー・ナイツ。「花様年華」「2046」と濃厚な作品が続きましたが、今回はとてもスウィートな作品です。
ウォン・カーウァイ監督ならではのカメラワークや映像美はもちろんですけど、何よりこのキスシーンが全てを表している、そんな素敵な映画です。

I was so looking forward to watching My Blueberry Nights by
Wong Kar Wai. His last two films, "in the mood for love" and "2046" were very deep and rich, but this film is really sweet.
Wong Kar Wai's siginificant camerawork and the way he uses lights, red, trains and music were all beautiful. Above all this kiss explain all about the film.

DANCER IN THE DARK

ラース・フォン・トリアー監督による「ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク」。とても悲しい映画だと聞いていたので見るのをためらっていたけど、ついに。
ストーリーはかなり暗いです。でもBjörkの音楽やミュージカルな場面、映像の撮り方などなど素晴らしい映画。特に最後のシーンは悲しいんだけど、限りなく美しい。

DANCER IN THE DARK is directed by Lars von Trier. I knew this film is really sad but finally I decided to watch.
The story is very depressing. However, the music by Björk, musical scean, and the way it was filmed are so beautiful. Especially the final scene is very sad but extremely artistic.

潜水服は蝶の夢を見る

ジュリアン・シュナーペル監督による潜水服は蝶の夢を見る / Le Scaphandre et le Papillion。フランスELLEの編集長だったジャン＝ドミニク・ボビーはある日突然脳梗塞で倒れ、左目しか動かせなくなります。これは彼が左目のまばたきだけで伝えた物語。でも、ただの感動物語に終わらず、ジャン＝ドミニクの視点から、彼の感じたことが人間くさく描かれています。カメラのアングルや、音楽、衣装など、いちいち芸術的。カンヌやゴールデン・グローブなどで、色んな賞を受賞しているのも納得でした。

The film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly / Le Scaphandre et le Papillion by Julian Schnabel is based on a real story. In the film, Jean-Dominique Bauby, a former editor of French ELLE magazine, has a massive stroke. Bauby can move only his left eye, so the entire story was written about him communicating by blinking his left eyelid. The story is written from Bauby's point of view: his desires and dilemmas. The camera angles, music, and clothes are very artistic. This is definitely worth watching.

The Usual Suspects

ブライアン・シンガー監督の『ユージュアル・サスペクツ』。普段サスペンスは観ない私でも、これは相当面白いと思いました。ケヴィン・スペイシー演じるバーバラが鍵となり、彼の回想によって物語がうねうね錯綜しているので、最後の最後まで(そして最初に巻き戻して再度観るまで)理解できません。いやぁ〜、スゴイ面白かった。

This is a film directed by Bryan Singer made in 1995. I don't normally watch crime film but this is definitely worth watching. Verbal (Kevin Spacey) is a key to the film and the story gets twisted by flashbacks. I couldn't work out what was really going on until the last minutes. I had to go back to the start of the film to really understand.

ほら男爵の冒険

1940年代〜80年代に活躍したチェコのアニメーション作家、カレル・ゼマンの作品です。『ほら吹き男爵の冒険』の話がモチーフになっていて、ユーモアのセンスが半端ない。「月に降り立ってみると、そこには先客がいて・・・」とはじまり、ありえない話が真面目に繰り広げられていきます。
ただ面白いだけじゃなくて、映像美というか、実写とアニメーションを組み合わせた描き方が素晴らしい。ゼマンの作品の中でも、私の一番のお気に入りです。

Baron Prásil is made by Czech animator and filmmaker, Karel Zeman. He made animated film from 40's to 80's. This film is also known as The Fabulous Baron Munchausen. The story is very humorous nonsense, and sweet.
This film is not only funny but also very artistic. It starts with Gustave Doré's drawings and live actors wandering through animated settings. This is my favorite film of Zeman.

スパニッシュ・アパートメント

ヨーロッパで大ヒットしたセドリック・クラピッシュ監督の映画スパニッシュ・アパートメント。フランス・イギリス・イタリア等7カ国から集まった留学生のフラットシェアの話です。自分がロンドンに住んでいた時のことを思い出しました。
ちょっとした単語の言い間違い・聞き間違いが面白かったり、お互いのアクセントをからかいあったり・・・。いろんな言語や国籍がごちゃ混ぜになっていて「まさにこんな感じ！」。ヨーロッパの良い所は、国によって文化が全然違うのに、人と人の距離が近いこと。最高に面白い映画です！

I watched l'auberge espagnole, the filme directed by Cédric Klapisch. The story is about students who share a flat in Balcelona. They are from seven different countries, France, England, Italy etc. It reminded me of my time in London.
Being with European friends was just like this filme, misunderstanding some words, making a fun about each other's acccent... The good thing about Europe is that each country has very different culture, yet people could easily get close! I relly loved this filme.

Frida

ジュリー・テイモア監督のよる映画フリーダ。私は画家としてのフリーダ・カーロに興味があったので観ましたが、その映像の美しさには目を見張りました。ブラザーズ・クエイによるアニメーションもあり、とてもアーティスティックな作品です。
自分の体の痛みや心の苦しみを、全部絵にぶつけたフリーダ。かといって彼女の人生は決して悲観的だったわけではなく、そこには全てを受け入れ、全てを楽しもうとする彼女の意志がありました。本当に感動的なストーリー、素晴らしい映画です。

I watched Frida, a film directed by Julie Taymor because I was interested in Frida Kahlo's life as an artist. But the film was surprisingly good, one of the best film I've ever seen. There were animation by Brothers Quay in the film, which was very artistic.
Frida suffered from constant physical pain from her broken spine and leg but her life wasn't all pessimistic. She acccepted the way she was and tried to keep going as much as she could. The story was really inspiring. Great film.

裏窓 / Rear Window

ヒッチコック監督の「裏窓」は、主人公の部屋から見えるマンションの裏窓を中心に物語が展開し、まるで舞台劇を見ているみたい。見る前に「ストーリーはさほど面白くない」と言われたんですが、私は最後までドキドキし通しでした。特にクライマックスの、暗い部屋の中で主人公がカメラのフラッシュを犯人に向けてたくシーンは素晴らしいと思いました。
グレース・ケリーのファッションはとても美しくてため息が出ます。50年代のドレスやメークアップなど、気品に溢れています。素敵でした。

"Rear Window" by Hitchcock is like watching a play in the theatre. The story is really thrilling especially the scene that Jeff, the leading actoer, used a camera flash towards a suspect (He thought this guy killed his wife) in the dark room was just amazing.
And Grace Kelly's fashion was very elegant, beautiful. 50's desses which she was wearing ware so gorgeous and her hair and makeup was adoreable.

シコふんじゃった。

本気で笑いました。卒業するための単位と引き換えに、廃部寸前の相撲部に入ることになった大学生の話です。個々の登場人物のキャラクター設定や、絶妙な台詞の言い回し(しかもみんな淡々と話します)など、とにかく本当に面白い！
「お尻を公衆の面前にさらす必要性が全く感じられない」と、まわしの下にスパッツを履く外国人留学生や、好きな男の子のために土俵にあがる女マネージャー等、相撲ブームであった1992年に、普通の大学生達の視線から「相撲」を色んな角度からとらえています。私の大学には相撲部がないのが残念です！

"Shiko Funjatta" is a film by Masao Suo, who also directed "Shall We Dance?" It is a story about a university student who happened to join a "sumo club" to get enough credits in order to graduate from university. This film is so funny in every way.
In the film an English exchange student also joined the club but refuses to wear "mawashi" (loincloth) because he doesn't think it is necessary to show his bottom in public. And there was a girl who wrestled in the public even though women are officially prohibited from competing in sumo. This film makes you see sumo from many different ways.

A Clockwork Orange

遅ればせながら、29歳にしてやっと見ました「時計じかけのオレンジ」。この作品はずっと見たくて、でも自分がちゃんと理解できるか自信が持てなかったので、躊躇していたものです。が、まず最初の画面から度肝を抜かれました。圧倒的な映像と音楽。
この映画は1971年に公開されたとは思えないほど新鮮です。建物のインテリアや洋服には時代をしのばせるものがありますが、それは今見てもとてもクール。ストーリーには暴力的な面があります。でも、この映画から得られるものは、それだけではない。「本当に見て良かった」と久々に思える映画でした。

I have been wanting to watch "A Clockwork Orange" for a long time but I wasn't sure if I could appreciate it enough yet. But finally I took my courage to watch it today. I was speechless from the beginning of the film. Those images and the music were just overwhelming.
This film was made in 1971. I can see it from the interior of the buildings and the fashion but it still is very cool today. The story is violent but definitely this film is not only about that. This is the one of the best films I have ever seen in my life.

彼岸花 / Higanbana

小津安二郎監督の「彼岸花」。これは小津監督の初めてのカラー作品だったのですが、独特のカメラワーク(カメラを動かさないし、とても低い位置から撮影されています)や、ストーリー構成、色使いなど、小津美学が感じられる作品です。
他人の娘の結婚には寛容なのに、自分の娘の結婚にはムキになってしまう父親に私は涙してしまいました。撮影されたのは1958年、高度経済成長の初期の頃の日本の家庭の姿が浮かび上がってきます。

"Higanbana" is a film directed by the late Yasujiro Ozu. Ozu is a highly regarded directer around the world and I could see why. He had a very original cinematic style and the film was very beautiful. He never moved the camera and had a strong idea about stories and colours. It was shot in 1958 and showed us traditional Japanese family life was like back then.

BABEL

今日は、今話題の映画バベルを見に行ってきました。Alejandro González Iñárritu(アレハンドロ・ゴンサレス・イニャリトゥ)監督ならではの、1つの銃を軸に、アメリカ、モロッコ、メキシコそして東京の4都市でいろんな物語が交差します。登場人物が多いため少し説明不足というか、それぞれのキャラクターの描写が充分ではなかった気もしましたが、期待通りの良い映画でした。内容は決してHAPPYなものではなく、見終わってからずっしりと残るものがあります。
私が好きなCate Blanchettがインタビューで「台詞数が少なく自分が演じるのを迷った」と言っていましたが、言葉は少なくても彼女の存在感はすごく大きかったです。

I went to see BABEL today. It always takes a long time for foreign films to come to Japan. I've read many reviews about this film and it was as good as I expected. The story goes over four countries so there weren't enough explanations about each characters' background. This is definitely not a happy film but left a big impact.
Rinko Kikuchi (pictured right) was nominated for many awards. She hasn't played many big roles in Japan yet, so this film made her famous here. I am looking forward to seeing her next film.
