靖国神社 / Yasukuni shrine

何かにつけ議論の的になる靖国神社。私は初めて行ったのですが、東京・九段下という超都心にあるにも関わらず、広い敷地に巨大な鳥居には驚きました。週末ということもあり、参道沿いにはフリーマーケットのようなものも出ていました。桜の木がいっぱいあったので、お花見の頃はさぞキレイでしょうね。
昨日は北海道新聞の記者の人が取材をしており、一緒に行った私の弟も話を聞かれていました。靖国神社については色々な意見がありますが、これが歴史や外交問題を考えるきっかけになっていることも確かではないでしょうか。

Yasukuni shrine is located in central Tokyo. The building is surprisingly big and there are some shops which sell Japanese pottery along the street that leads to the shrine at the weekend. There are a lot of arguments about Yasukuni but it makes us be aware of the history and the relationship between other countries and Japan.

Wallpaper City Guide TOKYO

Wallpaperという雑誌が出している、TOKYO CITY GUIDEという東京のガイドブックを発見しました。東京の見所、ホテル、24時間などなど、項目ごとにデザイン性の高い場所が紹介されています。本の後ろには、ちょっとしたスケッチやメモなどできるページもあり、自分でカスタマイズできるのも素敵。いろんな都市のガイドブックが発行されているので、海外旅行に行く時にはチェックしてみようと思います。

TOKYO CITY GUIDE tells you the place to go in Tokyo, the best cafes, bars, shops and buildings and so on. It's produced by Wallpaper magazine so you are guaranteed to see the coolest places in Tokyo. My favourite part of the book is "architour" section where you will find a lot of interesting buildings.

CIBONE

外苑前・青山ベルコモンズの中にあるインテリアショップCIBONEに行ってきました。店内は思ったよりも広く、2フロアに分かれています。ギャラリーではベラルーシ共和国出身のアーティスト、ヴィカ ミトリチェンカのエキシビジョンが開催されており、いろんな食器のかけらを組み合わせた、彼女の不思議作品に出会えます。店内は、インテリアだけでなく、雑誌や外国の写真集なども充実。私のお気に入り商品は、等身大の大きさの馬(プラスチック製で、黒にペイントされています)のランプ。かなり置く場所を選びますが・・・。とても面白くかつスタイリッシュなセレクトで、長時間いてもゼンゼン飽きませんでした。

CIBONE is one of the best interior shops in Aoyama, Tokyo. There is a gallery space and an exhibition by Vika Mitrichenka is on at the moment. There are a lot of nice furniture, interior goods and magazines you can enjoy. The shop is quite spacious so that you can stay a long time and look aound. My favourite is the black horse lamp, which is as big as real horse!

森美術館 / Mori Art Museum

夜の森美術館に行ってきました。週末は混んでいるけど平日の夜は人も少なくゆったりとしています。5/6までは「日本美術が笑う」というテーマで、埴輪から江戸時代の庶民信仰、モダンアートまで幅広く展示されています。本気で笑えるもの、バカバカしいと思いながらもつい微笑んでしまうもの、ちょっと考えさせられるものまで色々でした。私のお気に入りは「放屁合戦」ー1886年／江戸時代／河鍋暁斎ーという絵巻物。最初に芋を食べてオナラをしながら戦う、というストーリーが笑えます。JOHN WOOD & PAUL HARRISONによるビデオ作品、シベリア出身のアート集団THE BLUE NOSESの作品や、韓国のGIMHONGSOKによる「コヨーテ」などなど、他にも面白い作品がいっぱい。エキシビジョンを見終わった後は、展望台・東京シティービューで東京の夜景を楽しみました。

I went to Mori Art Museum in Roppongi. It is very busy at the weekend but less crowded on a weekday night. "The Smile in Japanese Art" exhibition is on now till the 6th of May. Art from the Jomon Period (from about 10,000 BC to 300 BC.) to the Early Twentieth Century is shown. My favourite piece is " Farting Contest Scrolls" by Kawanabe Kyosai. For modern art, I really liked the video work done by "John Wood & Paul Harrison", Russian art group "The Blue Noses", and Korean artist "Gim Hongsok". After seeing the exhibition you can enjoy the night view of Tokyo at Tokyo City View in the empty cafe.

浅草 / Asakusa

今日、4月8日は花まつり(お釈迦様の誕生日だそうです)ということもあり、浅草界隈はすごい人だかりでした。「浅草寺」は東京の観光名所で、すごい古くからあるお寺というイメージだったのですが、本堂は1945年の東京大空襲で焼失し1958年の再建されたものだそうです。写真上の「雷門」は1865年に焼失後、長らく仮設の門が建てられていたのが、1960年に松下幸之助さんによって再建されました。
雷門から本堂にかけての仲見世通りには、食べ物やさんからお土産やさんまでお店がいっぱい立ち並び、とても楽しいけれどすごい人。花まつりの今日は、まるでBjörkのようなメイク＆ドレスアップした子達がパレードをしていました。

Asakusa is a downtown area of East Tokyo and it is famous for Senso-ji, a Buddhist temple. It was rebuilt in 1958 after it got burnt in one of the 1945 Tokyo air raids. There is a gate called "Kamirai-mon" (picture above), from the gate to the temple, you walk along "Nakamise-dori" street, which has shop after shop. You can buy and eat snacks or sweets while walking, which is not considered to be good manners elsewhere in Japan. The street is very crowded with tourists, but it makes this traditional shopping area even more exciting.

選挙 / Tokyo mayoral election

4月8日は東京都知事選挙です。14人程の候補者がいますが、街頭に掲示されているポスターは約5名。私は誰に投票しようかまだ考え中なのですが・・・。そこで気になるのが投票率。4年前の都知事選挙では44.94％だったようで、ありえないくらいの低い数字です。オーストラリアでは18歳以上の人に選挙権があり、州または国の選挙に投票が義務付けられているそうです。投票しなかった場合には罰金が科せられるので、投票率はいつも90％以上。罰金を払わないといけないから投票する、というのは少し悲しいけれど、より多くの人の意思を政治に反映させるためにはそういう手段も必要なのかなと思ってしまいます。是非みなさん、選挙に行きましょう！

The Tokyo mayoral election is going to be held on Sun. Fourteen candidates are running. Voter turnout 4 years ago was only 44.94%, less than half. It shows how little Japanese are interested in politics. The goverment should do something about it, for example fining people who don't vote for an election, like in Australia. I am not a very political person but still think it is our duty to show what we believe on election day. Let's vote!

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

21_21 DESIGN SIGHTは3/30にオープンした六本木・東京ミッドタウンの敷地内にある、デザインリサーチセンター。身近にあるものを使って、大人も子供も一緒にデザインについて考える、意見を交換する、そんな場にしていくそうです。オープンから4/18までは、21_21 DESIGN SIGHTをデザインした建築家・安藤忠雄さんによる建築模型・写真・ドローイングなどを展示しています。最初のエキシビジョンが始まる前に、オープンしたばかりの建物を感じてもらおう、という趣旨のようです。建物の中はコンクリートの打ちっぱなしで、とてもシンプルでありながらも廊下とかがちょっとした迷路みたい。「一枚の布」からヒントを得た屋根は、一枚のように見えるのですが、コンクリートを何枚も何枚も重ねて一枚に見えるように工夫したそうです。4/27からは「チョコレート」をテーマにしたエキシビジョンが始まるそうなので、楽しみです！

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was opened on 30th of March. It is not so much a museum as research center for design. The building was designed by genius architect Tadao Ando. There is a special program about this building at the moment and we can see the design process from start to finish through architectural models, photographs, and drawings. Ando is one of my favorite architects, so it was really interesting to just wander around in the buildings. From 27th of April, "Chocolate" exhibition will start. I must go to see that, too.

昨日はファションショーを2本見てきました。EBIS303で行われた「ダイエットブッチャースリムスキン」では、やんちゃな男子モデルがパンクな音楽に合わせてノリノリで登場。中には鼻血を出した特殊メイクをしてるコも。ショーを見に来ていた人達も、クリエイティブな感じがしました。

ブランド名は「ガラ アーベント」と発音するそうです。ジキル博士とハイド氏が今季のテーマだったようで、なんだか官能的でした。モーニングスーツに始まり、どの洋服もとってもキレイに仕立ててあり、私の中ではヨーロッパの貴族のイメージ。一番感動したのが、最後のモデルが登場した瞬間、薔薇の花びらが空から降ってきたこと！そして薔薇が降り続く中、フィナーレでモデルが全員登場。ショーが終わった後も、会場には薔薇の香りが漂っていました。

I went to see two fashion shows today. DIET BUTCHER SLIM SKIN was punk but very cool. It is amazing that punk fashion is still in after 30 years. But Japanese who wear punk are not necessarily into punk music. Some people like it just as fashion.
Galaabent was very classic. And it was a big surprise that rose petals fluttered in the air at the end of the show. All the models walked through the petals and the stage was left smelling of fragrant rose. It was very exciting.

桜 / cherry blossoms

今日は中目黒へお花見に行きました。ここは目黒川に桜がせり出していて、とても迫力があります。歩道はお花見をしている人や、ビールやおつまみを売る人で、すごい人だかり。川の水面に桜の花びらがいっぱい降り注いでいて、とってもステキでした。

Many Japanese people like cherry blossoms. A lot of people have a picnic in the park to appreciate the blooms. Of course, some people enjoy each others' company, food and drinks more than the blossoms. Schools, jobs and the financial year in Japan start in April, so cherry blossoms have become the symbol of spring and also a new life.
