Wallpaper City Guide OSAKA

雑誌Wallpaper*がファイドンから発行しているWallpaper* City Guideの大阪版がもうすぐ発売！私もリサーチャーとして参加しました。
「大阪」のイメージといえば食べ物とか、吉本のお笑い、日本で2番目の都市とかですが、建築やデザイン、ショッピングという点でも、意外と見所はたくさんあります。そういうところがカバーされているガイドブック、特に英語のものは今までなかったので「京都に行くついでに大阪に寄ったけど、何を見ていいか分からなかった」という人は多いはず。「観光名所に行くだけじゃなくて、クールな大阪が見たい！」という人はぜひぜひ。

Wallpaper* City Guide Osaka has come out! I worked as a researcher and I have been looking forward to seeing this book.
Osaka is underestimated. The city has a reputation for food and business, and it's Japan's second city, however, there is a lot more to this place - including great architecture, well-designed products and interiors and excellent shops.
A lot of people go to Osaka on the way to Kyoto and have trouble finding anything amazing - until now there hasn't been a guide book about the real Osaka.
For those who want to check out cool Osaka as well as sight seeing sites, this guide book is the one to get!

光の教会 / The Church of The Light

大阪・茨木にある安藤忠雄建築・光の教会。私が行ったの2年前の夏は、心付けを残せば自由に見学できたんだけど、今は事前に予約が必要みたいです。JR茨木駅からさらにバス、そして住宅地のど真ん中にある小さな教会。
外から見るとごく普通のコンクリートのブロックだけど、一歩中に足を踏み入れると、十字架のかたちをした窓ガラスから光が差し込んだ室内には圧倒的な存在感と、厳かな空気が漂っています。
今月号のCasa Brutusが安藤さん特集で、付録で付いていたDVDをついさっき見て、この教会のことを思い出しました。

The Church of The Light must be the one of the most famous churches in Japan. It is a short bus ride from Ibaraki Station, Osaka. Visitors have to book in advance to see inside.
It is just a small concrete building from outside but when you go in, it is another world. The light shone into the room through the cross shaped window and it feels so sublime (even though I am not Christian...).
I was watching DVD about Ando, which came with this month's Casa Brutus magazine. And it reminded me of this church.

ラピート / Rapi:t

関空となんばを結ぶ南海ラピート。近未来的な外見とは裏腹なレトロな内装で、そのギャップにやられました。約30分でなんばに着くので意外と便利。しかも大阪市内の地下鉄1日乗車券とセットの切符を買うとかなりお得です。大阪って「割引」とか「安い」って言葉に敏感だと思う。さすが商売の街です。

Rapi:t is the express train from Kansai Airport to Namba, in the middle of Osaka. Despite looking futuristic from the outside, the interior is very very retro. It took only 30mins to Namba. I got the single ticket with 1 day metro pass for a very good price. Because Osaka is a merchant town Osakans likes "discount". So you can pick up the bargains everywhere!

関空 / Kansai Airport

スターフライヤーに乗ったために、何年ぶりかの関空へ到着。レンゾ・ピアノ設計の1.7kmもある長い長いターミナルは相変わらずガラガラです。長すぎて写真に上手くおさまらないけど、遠くから見るとかなり迫力があります。開港してもう14年になるけど、とてもきれいでビックリしました。

Because I took the STARFLYER, I arrived at Kansai Airport. It has been a few years since last time I was there. The long long 1.7km terminal was designed by Renzo Piano. It is too long to fit in the photo. The airport was very quiet as usual. 14 years since the opening but it looked as new as the day it opened.

国立国際美術館 / NMAO

中之島にあるシーザー・ペリ設計の国立国際美術館。かなり変わった輪郭で、遠くからでも目立っていました。常設展はウォーホールやデュシャンをはじめ、現代美術の作品がずらり。企画展はアボリジニの芸術家、エミリー・ウングワレー展が。80歳を過ぎてから制作活動を始めたという彼女の作品が並んでいて、その力強さに圧倒されました。

The National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO) is in Nakanoshima area. It is designed by César Pelli and stands out from a distance. Permanent exhibition includes Warhol and Duchamp. And an Australian Aboriginal artist, Emily Kame Kngwarreye's exhibition is held till April 13th. She started her career as an artist when she is over 80. Her paintings are very strong and inspiring.

今宮戎神社 / Imamiya Ebisu Shrine

商売の神様を祭る今宮戎神社へ。「えっべさん」として知られ、1月9・10・11日には100万人の参拝者があるそうですが、普通の日はいたって静か。デザインが中々スタイリッシュな神社だと思いました。

Imamiya Ebisu Shrine is presenting a god of business. From 9th to 11th of January, one million people visit the shrine to pray their business to go well for a year. But normal weekday, it is quiet. It is quite small but stylish shrine.

狭山池博物館 / Sayamaike Museum

安藤忠雄による建築、狭山池博物館へ。日本最古のダム式ため池である狭山池に関する展示は見せ方がとても上手で、そこまで池に興味がない私でも充分楽しめました。無料で見学できるというのも珍しいのでは。
建物に沿って勢いよく流れる水と無機質なコンクリートの対比は、安藤さんならではで、遠路はるばる来たかいがありました。

Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum is designed by Tadao Ando. The exhibition is about Sayamaike pond next to the building. Even though I am not a big fan of the pond, I enjoyed it. Admission fee is free, which is very rare for Japanese museum but it is a good thing.
The contrast of the concrete wall and running water is Ando's significant style. It is quite long way from the town but definitely worth going there.

御堂筋 / Midosuji

キタ(梅田)とミナミ(難波)を結ぶ御堂筋。そごうや大丸などの百貨店から、シャネルやエルメスなどの有名ブランドの路面店まで、有名建築家による建物が並んでいます。こういったメインストリート的な役割を持つ道路があるというのは良いことです。

Midosuji connect between Kita area (around Umeda, Osaka station) and Minami area (around Namba). Department stores and boutique shops such as Hermès and Chanel are designed by famous architects. It is nice to have a main street like this which Tokyo is missing.

万博公園 / Expo Park

岡本太郎の太陽の塔(写真上)がそびえたつ万博公園。曇り空の下見ると、また違った迫力があります。1970年に開催された万博からもう38年。公園内に植えられた木々も大きくなり、広大な敷地はどこも丁寧に手が加えられていました。
特に日本庭園は予想以上に素晴らしく、入り口近くの休憩所からは素敵な眺めを見ることができます。
公園設計の総合プロデュースが丹下健三だったり、黒川紀章による建築物、イサム・ノグチの作品など、日本を代表する建築家、芸術家の作品の宝庫でもあります。

The Tower of the Sun by Taro Okamoto stands in the middle of the Expo Memorial Park. It has been 38 years since Expo '70 is held but the park is kept perfectly.
Especially Japanese garden was much better than I expected. The view from a rest area by the entrance is amazing.
The whole park is designed by Kenzo Tange. The museum designed by Kisho Kurokawa and Isamu Noguchi's art are also in the park. This park offers a lot of things done by Japanese maestro.

梅田スカイビル / Umeda Sky Building

原広司による梅田スカイビル。大阪駅から地下通路を通って徒歩10分、周りには他に何もナシという、なんとなく不便な場所にあります。駅周辺が再開発されている模様ですが。
空中庭園からは大阪の街が一望できます。35階からは2つのビルをつなぐエスカレーターで上まで登るのも面白い。最上階では外に出れるので、冷たい風にびゅんびゅん吹かれるのは気持ちがいいです。

Umeda Sky Building is designed by Hiroshi Hara. It is 10mins walk from Osaka station. There are not many things around the building but this area is still developing.
From the Floating Garden Observatory, we can see the view of whole Osaka area. From 35th floor, we go up by elevator which connects two tall building. We can go outside on the top floor so that we can stand in the crispy fresh air.

大阪城 / Osaka Castle

梅が咲き始めたこの日の大阪城。何年も前に学校の遠足で行って以来です。天気も良く、公園内には大道芸人や「写真を撮らせて下さい」という学生達がいました。
大阪城公園のすぐ外の大阪ビジネスパークには高層ビルが立ち並んでいて、お城とのギャップが面白いです。

Ume trees have started blossoming Osaka castle. It was sunny warm day and there are some buskers and students doing their performance in the park.
I could see Osaka Business Park with a lot of high-rise buildings just outside of the park. The contrast between the castle and tower blocks is interesting.

天保山 / Tempozan

大阪のベイエリア・天保山へ。安藤忠雄による設計のサントリー美術館(写真上)や、一世を風靡した海遊館(写真左)など、遊べそうなところがたくさんあって、いい感じで賑わっていました。
近所にあるレトロな天満屋ビル(写真下)にはギャラリーやカフェが入っているみたいです。残念ながらこの日は全部お休みでした。
大阪湾岸には煙をはく工場やクレーンが立ち並んでいるのが見え、良くも悪くも日本らしい風景。夜景とかきれいでしょうね。

I went to Tempozan Harbor Village, Osaka. The SUNTORY MUSEUM designed by Tadao Ando, the Osaka Aquarium KAIYUKAN and a Ferris wheel are there.
The view of Osaka bay is very Japanese. A lot of factories producing smoke and cranes are lined up one after another. The night view must be quite nice.
Tenmaya Bldg (pictured right) built in 1935 is 5mins' walk from the museum. The building was closed when I visited but it looked like there was a nice cafe and gallery inside.
