京都のお寺といえば、清水寺、金閣寺、銀閣寺などが有名ですが、有名どころを一通り見ても、見るべきお寺や神社はいくらでも出てきます。東寺は世界遺産に登録されているけれど、他と比べるとそんなに人気はないのでは。創建から1200年と、歴史のあるお寺です。今は「京都冬の旅」と特別展で、五重塔の初層内部が公開されていました。金堂、講堂にもたくさんの阿弥陀像が並べられていて、圧巻です。高いなぁと思って見上げてた五重塔は54.8メートルもあって、木造塔としては日本一高いそう。

There are so many temples and shrines in Kyoto - maybe too many. Even I visited the most famous ones across Kyoto, there are still many left. Toji temple is also listed as the World Heritage, however, it is not as popular as other temples.
Now, the special exhibition is on and the ground floor of the pagoda is open to public. There many statues displayed in the main hall and the lecture hall. I thought the pagoda was really high - apparently, it is 54.8m tall, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan.
