このたび、南オーストラリアのアデレードに移住することになりました。アデレードは東京ほどエキサイティングではないけれど、のんびりしていて暮らしやすいところです。

Tommy at Watanabe Hair Dressing

「セックス・アンド・ザ・シティー2」を観て「ちゃんと自分メンテナンスしなきゃ！」と思い立ち、Watanabe Hair Dressingへ駆け込みました。原宿通りの地下にある隠れ家的なサロンです。
いつもお願いしているのがTommyさん。私の髪はなかなかパーマがかからないのですが、彼女のマジックハンドでキャリーのようにくりっくりに！本当にありがとうございました！

After watching the film, "Sex and the City 2", I thought "I need to have my hair done!" So I rushed into the Watanabe Hair Dressing in Harajuku Dori.
Tommy does my hair and she is clearly the best hairdresser in Tokyo! Tommy worked in London for a few years so she can speak perfect English (Believe me, it is rare in Japan!). On top of that, she can do Western and Asian hair, cut, colour, high-light, perm, straight perm and everything.
There are so many hair salons in Tokyo, yet very few good one. If you want to have "proper" hair done, go to see Tommy in Harajuku!

原美術館 / Hara Museum

ウィリアム・エグルストンの「パリー東京」展を見に原美術館まで足をのばしました。展覧会は残念ながら私の好みではなかったのですが、ここの美術館はステキです。品川じゃなければ、しかも駅から徒歩15分もかからなければ、もっと頻繁に通っていたことでしょう。
特に、2階にあるインスタレーション、宮島達夫さんの「時の連鎖」の部屋は圧巻！何度でもぐるぐるまわりたくなります。お庭のインスタレーションもステキ。

I went to see William Eggleston's "Paris -Tokyo" exhibition at the Hara Museum. His photographs were not my cup of tea but I like this museum. If it wasn't in Shinagawa, or it wasn't so far away from the station, I would have come here more often.
My favourite artwork in the museum is "Time Link", a room by Tatsuo Miyajima on the 2nd floor. The sculptures in the garden are also exiting.

清澄白河の小山登美夫ギャラリーでは奈良美智の「セラミック・ワーク」展が開催中。奈良さん人気はやっぱりすごいです。
Taka Ishii Galleryでは荒木経惟の「古希ノ写真」展が。レイディ・ガガが被写体になった作品など、アラーキーの世界が炸裂してました。時代をとらえるスピード感とか、写真を撮る瞬発力とか、勢いを感じました。

Yoshitomo Nara's "ceramic works" exhibition is held at the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Kiyosumi Shirakawa. Nara is really poplar, especially among women in Japan. I think his innocent-looking girl motif reflects Japanese immature kawaii culture well.
At the Taka Ishii Gallery, photographer Araki's exhibition is on and his recent works including Lady Gaga's shots are on display. Araki has an eye for catching the spirit of the times and I could really feel explosiveness and speed from his work.

東京国立近代美術館 / MOMAT

皇居のそばにある東京国立近代美術館で開催中の建築はどこにあるの？7つのインスタレーション展。普段、建物という実用的なもの(？)をつくっている建築家さんによるインスタレーション。7人の建築家たちがそれぞれ何を大切にしてるのか、とか、美意識的なものが空間に表現されていて、建築模型の展示とは違った面白さがありました。
工芸館の「アール・デコ時代の工芸とデザイン」展も良かったです。特に、1908年に三越のデザイナーとなり、日本のグラフィックデザインの先駆者となった杉浦非水のポスターは、今見てもすごくかっこよかったです。

"Where is Architecture? Seven Installations by Japanese Architects" exhibition is held at MOMAT, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The installation work by seven architects are presenting their aesthetic view or their concerns for architecture. It was interesting to see different side of architects from practical buildings.
"Modern Crafts and Design in the Art Deco Period" exhibition held at the Craft and Design department was also good. I thought posters and graphics by Hisui Sugiura who worked as a designer for Mitsukoshi department store since 1908 were still chic and voguish today.

東京都現代美術館で開催中のフセイン・チャラヤン展。過去のコレクションの映像や、チャラヤンの洋服をまとったマネキンのインスタレーション、映像作品など、すごい。ファッションというよりは「表現」です。
この展覧会は長谷川裕子さんによるキューレーション。ファッション系の展覧会ってつまらないものになりがちだけれど、ただ単に服をみせるのではなく、変化のあるインスタレーションでわくわくする空間づくりがされていて、素晴らしかった。

I went to see the "Hussein Chalayan - from fashion and back" exhibition at MOT. There were films of of his fashion shows from 1900s, installation of mannequins wearing dress by Chalayan and films which were shown at Venice Biennale in 2005. The exhibition was much more than just fashion.
This exhibition was curated by Yuko Hasegawa. The fashion exhibition could be boring but she managed to present the whole space lively by presenting various installations.

深川東京モダン館 / Fukagawa Tokyo Modern Kan

1932年に建てられた建物をリノベーションした深川東京モダン館。何ともわけの分からないネーミングですが、ここは深川界隈と江東区の観光案内所で、2階がギャラリーやカフェ、落語会など様々なイベントが開催できるスペースになっています。
門前仲町の周辺では面白そうな場所が増えてきています。とても丁寧につくられた周辺の探索マップもあるので、このエリアに来ることがあればぜひ活用してみてください。

Fukagawa Tokyo Modern Kan is a tourist information center for Monzen Nakacho area and Koto-ward. The building is constructed in 1932 and renovated last year. There is a multipurpose space upstairs where art exhibition or rakugo show is held - it was turned into a cafe when I was there.
There are a lot of things happening in Monzen Nakacho (locals call it "Monnaka") area. If you happened to be in Monnaka, pop in to find more about the area.

新宿の目 / The eye of Shinjuku

東京に住んで5年半、未だに分からないのが新宿駅周辺です。特にいつ行っても迷うのが西口。今日は初めて「新宿の目」の前を通りました。
「新宿の目」は1969年に宮下芳子によって制作された壁面彫刻(?）というかオブジェ。目の中が動くんですね。

I have been living in Tokyo for more than five years and yet, I don't understand Shinjuku area. I always get lost specially around West exit area - it is impossible for me to understand how to get places. But I happened to walk pass the "The Eye of Shinjuku" today.
"The Eye of Shinjuku" is created by Yoshiko Miyashita in 1969. Surprisingly, this eye ball moves and changes its color.

Tokyo Sky Tree

日に日に伸びていく東京スカイツリー。あの辺りは周りに高い建物がない分、ひときわ目立ちます。現時点で368m、日本一高い建物です。

Tokyo Sky Tree is growing day by day. The tower stands out a lot because there aren't any tall building near by. It is 368m tall now - the tallest building in Japan.

清澄白河の深川江戸資料館の通り沿いに新しくできたギャラリーSNAC。東京都現代美術館に行く途中に偶然見つけました。
今は「八木良太展」が開催されていますが、ダンスとかパフォーマンス、トークイベントも行われる空間のようです。このストリートが盛り上がっていくといいな。

I found a new gallery space on my way to MOT, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The SNAC opened last month.
It is holding young Japanese artist "Ryota Yagi" exhibition at the moment but the space will also host various events such as dance performance or talk show. I hope this streets will come to life with this gallery...

東寺 / Toji temple

京都のお寺といえば、清水寺、金閣寺、銀閣寺などが有名ですが、有名どころを一通り見ても、見るべきお寺や神社はいくらでも出てきます。東寺は世界遺産に登録されているけれど、他と比べるとそんなに人気はないのでは。創建から1200年と、歴史のあるお寺です。
今は「京都冬の旅」と特別展で、五重塔の初層内部が公開されていました。金堂、講堂にもたくさんの阿弥陀像が並べられていて、圧巻です。高いなぁと思って見上げてた五重塔は54.8メートルもあって、木造塔としては日本一高いそう。

There are so many temples and shrines in Kyoto - maybe too many. Even I visited the most famous ones across Kyoto, there are still many left. Toji temple is also listed as the World Heritage, however, it is not as popular as other temples.
Now, the special exhibition is on and the ground floor of the pagoda is open to public. There many statues displayed in the main hall and the lecture hall. I thought the pagoda was really high - apparently, it is 54.8m tall, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan.

お茶で有名な宇治は、京都駅からJR奈良線で約30分。源氏物語の舞台でもあります。しかし、京都とか奈良に来るたびに、もっとちゃんと日本史の勉強をしておけば良かった・・・と後悔。

Uji is only a half an hour away from Kyoto station. The Tail of Genji's, the classic work of Japanese literature by Murasaki Shikibu written in around 1000. Every time I come to Kyoto or Nara, it makes me wish that I paid more attention in history lessons at school...

宇治上神社 / Ujigami Shrine

こちらも世界遺産に登録されている宇治上神社。前にせりだした屋根が本当に美しい。神社建築では「日本最古の本殿」だそうです。
そんなことを知らずに入口から見ると、まあどこにでもある神社と思ってしまうけれど、裏にまわって本殿を見てびっくりでした。

Ujigami Shirine is also listed as World Heritage. The asymmetrical roof drew beautiful line -it is stunning. The main building is the oldest shrine in Japan!
Without knowing that, it looked kind of normal but it was a good surprise to find out the main shrine behind.

平等院鳳凰堂 / Byodo-in

10円玉でおなじみの平等院鳳凰堂。世界遺産にも登録されていますが、「意外とちっさいな」というのが第一印象でした。
極楽往生をイメージしてつくられていて、本堂の中には大きな阿弥陀如来坐像と、雲中供養菩薩像（雲に乗っている菩薩像）があります。建立は1052年だから、約1000年前！現在では色あせてしまっている本堂の中も、昔は金ぴかで豪華だったんでしょう。
しかし、冬の京都は寒い・・・。

Byodo-in temple is famous for being on the 10yen coin. The building is listed as the World Heritage Site, however, my first impression was "it is quite a small".
The temple was built in 1052, nearly 1000 years ago! A big statue of Amida and dozens of Unchu Bosatsu statue are displyed inside of the main building. The building was built to represent the Pure Land of the Buddha, heaven. Today the interior of the temple has lost its colour, but it used to be bright colourful and sparkling gold.
By the way, it is freexin in the winter in Kyoto...

もともと本堂にあった雲中供養菩薩像が何点かと、鳳凰や復元された壁扉画などが展示してあります。建物の設計は栗生明さん。

There are a few Unchu Bisatsu Kiyo zo(statues) and the statue of Phoenix which was used to be on the roof are on display.

国立西洋美術館 / The National Museum of Western Art

常設展のみ無料で開放されていた国立西洋美術館。手前の建物がル・コルビュジエによるものですが、企画展用のスペースで閉まっていたので中は見れず。ここはロダンの彫刻がたくさんあるんだけど、屋外に展示されている彫刻って良いなあと思います。
松方さんという実業家が、将来日本に美術館をつくることを考えて19世紀終わり〜20世紀初めにかけて収集したコレクションが主だそう。日本にもこういう方がいたんですね。なので、その時代の作家の作品がすごくたくさんあって、びっくりでした。

The National Museum of Western Art building is designed by Le Corbusier. But today, I could only go into the extension of the building where permanent exhibition was held. The museum has amazing collection of Rodin's sculpture.
A businessman Mr. Matsukata collected the artworks from late 19c to early 20c in order to exhibit them at a museum in the future. So there were good range of works from that period.

意外と色んなところから見える東京スカイツリー（新しい東京タワー）。写真の時点で200m、今は289mまで育ったらしい。634mまで伸びるそうです。
法隆寺などの伝統的な日本建築にみられる「そり」「むくみ」を利用していたり、デザインでは刀をイメージしていたりと、まあ色々あるんだろうけど、とても優雅なデザインだと私は思います。ランドマーク的なものの建築って、東京ではしばらくなかったし。完成が楽しみ！

It is getting easier to spot Tokyo Sky Tree as it grows. It was 200m tall a couple months ago, today it is 289m. It will be 634m when its completed.
The construction of the tower is influenced by Japanese traditional architectural method such as "sori" and "mukumi" and the design is inspired by the shape of a Japanese sword. Without any explanation, it is simply beautiful. There hasn't been much landmark is built in Tokyo for a long time so this is a good opportunity to make the city more interesting.

Day 10: London

The last day in London, I went to Wellcome Collection and Shoreditch.

ウェルカムコレクション
玄関ではゴームリー像がお出迎え。なんともいえない微妙な展示作品と空間でした。こういう科学的なものに、いかに興味を持ってもらえるような面白い展示をするかというところで、ものすごく工夫されていました。

The statue by Antony Gormly greeted us at the entrance. The exhibit is ... I don't know how to explain. But I was amazed how the way the displays were installed. It was trying hard to arouse visitors' interest through scientific and artistic exhibits.

サーチギャラリー
スローンスクエアに移転してからここに来るのは初めてです。若手アーティストの作品を中心に、サーチさんのコレクションが展示されています。
一番下の作品は、リチャード・ウィルソンの"20:50"。部屋中にオイル（石油？）が満たされていて、表面に反射する天井や壁が幾何学的な模様をつくっています。かなり強烈な匂いだけど。多分この人の作品を、昔のサーチで見たことがあって（8年ほど前かな？）、そのときは古い建物の中にオイルが満たされてたから、すごい違和感があって面白かった覚えがあります。

Saatchi Gallery
This is my first visit since the gallery moved here. There was a big exhibition of young artist's work.
The picture on the bottom is "20:50" By Richard Willson. He filled the room with oil up to one metre high. I remembered seeing his work at the old Saatchi where used be in a old building about eight years ago – the contrast between the old site and the black oil was quite incredible.

ハイドパーク
ここどこ？といった感じのハイドパーク。夏の緑におおわれた公園のイメージしかなかったもので。”蛇のようにくねくねしたサーペンタイン池”を見に来たのに、凍ってました。はじめて「氷が薄いので危ないよ！」の看板を見ました。

Hyde Park
It was like "where are we?". I've never seen the park covered by snow. It was beautiful but the Serpentine Lake was frozen so I couldn't check it is really twisting like a snake. The "Danger Thin Ice" was up...

サーペンタイン・ギャラリー
だんだん暗くなってきた公園の中を歩いて、やっと目的のギャラリーへ。ちょうど"Design Real"というデザインの展示をやっていました。ヘルメットとか飛行機のエコノミーシートまで、身近なものから普段は気にかけないようなものまでもりだくさん。日本のものは、±0の加湿器が展示されていました。

It was getting dark and we nearly got lost but managed to find the gallery. "Design Real" exhibition was on and various products such as helmet and economy seat were displayed. The ±0 humidifier from Japan was there, too.

Day 8: London

今日の目的はセント・ポール大聖堂とテートモダン。この2つはミレニアムブリッジでつながれています。
I went to St Paul's Cathedral and Tate Modern. The Millennium Bridge connects both site.

セント・ポール大聖堂
1710年にクリストファー・レンによって建てられた大聖堂。何年も改修工事をしてたけど、久しぶりにその姿を見ることができました。住んでたときは特に何とも思わなかったけど、こうやって旅行で来てみると、建物の美しさとか壮大さに圧倒される。

St Paul's Cathedral
The cathedral was built in 1710 by Sir Christopher Wren and it has been under repair work for years. It's been a long time since I saw the whole building uncovered. I didn't pay much attention to it when I lived there but it is a beautiful imposing cathedral.

テートモダン
ヘルツォーク&ド・ムーロンが、もと発電所だった建物を改装して、2000年にオープンした美術館。
ここの地上階、タービン・ホールに、いつも大型作品がインスタレーションされるのですが、今回はミロスワフ・バウカの"How it is"です。暗闇を体験できる大きな箱。床に大きなひびを走らせた、ドリス・サルセドの作品の跡もちゃんとありました。
この規模なのに、常設展は入館料が無料、というのがすごい。

Tate Modern
An architect duo Herzog & de Meuron renovated ex-power station and the building was reopened as a modern art museum in 2000.
The Turbin Hall always hots the most amazing installation artworks and this time, it was "How it is" by Miroslaw Balka. It is a huge box where visitors experience the darkness. It was fascinating to see floor mark made by Doris Salcedo's work of crack.
It is amazing that the entry for permanent exhibition is free – with this quantity and quality of collection!

Day 7: London

朝早く、人生初のロンドン・シティ・エアポートに到着。
4年ちょっとぶりのロンドンは案の定、曇り空。

I arrived at London City Airport! This is my first time (maybe last time) to use this airport!
After 4 years, London welcomed me with gray sky as usual.

中庭にはアニッシュ・カプーアの"Tall Tree and the Eye"が。

ナショナルギャラリー
7年もロンドンに住んでたのに、一度も行ったことがなかったナショナルギャラリー。なんてもったいないことをしたんだろう。
教科書なんかで何度も見た絵がごろごろしてます。ヤン・ファン・エイクの『アルノルフィーニ夫妻像』、ブロンズィーノの『愛の寓意』、ホルバインの『大使たち』・・・。ここにあったのね。
そして、トラファルガー広場の噴水の水が凍ってる！こんなの初めて見ました。

The National Gallery
I've never been inside of the gallery when I lived here for 7 years! There are so many great paintings that I read about or saw in books. Jan van Eyck's "The Arnolfini Portrait", Bronzino's "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time" or Hans Holbein's "The Ambassadors"...
I want to live in London again!
And I saw a frozen fountain at Trafalger Square – I've never seen London this cold before!

Day 6: Basel

バーゼル市立美術館
15世紀以降から現代美術まで幅広く、これでもか！というほどたくさんの作品が展示されていました。スイスの美術館では基本的に写真撮影不可。この時期は、中庭がアイススケートリンクになっていました。

They had magnificent collection of artworks from 15th century to today. There was so much to see! In winter, the museum's courtyard has been turned into ice-skating link.

夕方ロンドンに向かう予定が、雪のためフライトがキャンセル！定刻通りバーゼル空港で飛行機に乗ったものの、ヒースローが混んでいたため離陸できず。2時間も動かない飛行機の中でワインをふるまわれ、ほろ酔い気分に。でも明朝にスイスエアのフライトでロンドンシティ空港に行ける上、空港近くのホテルを手配してもらえたので（しかもディナー＆ドリンク付き）ラッキーでした。
I was supposed to go to London in the evening but my flight got cancelled due to snow in London. We were asked to board at scheduled time but the plane couldn't take off. We sat on the plane for two hours with complimentary wine, it was enough to make me drunk. However, we were lucky to be given accommodation with dinner for free (I didn't have any Swiss francs left!) and to be rebooked to fly with Swiss Air to London City Airport in early next morning.

Day 5: Basel

ドイツとフランスの国境にあるスイスのバーゼル。空港を出るときも、フランス側の出口とスイス側の出口があって、それぞれで雰囲気が違うのも面白い。基本ドイツ語みたいだけど、場所（人？）によってはフランス語も英語もありです。
そして、この街には信号がほとんどありません。それでもちゃんと機能しているのがすごい。街はどこでもトラムで移動できるのでとても便利でした。

Swiss city Basel is located on the border of Germany and France. In the airport, they even have two exit, one for Swiss and one for France. I think Germany is their official language but a lot of people speak French and English, maybe more...
I was really surprised that there is no traffic light on the streets, even in the center of Basel. But everything works and pedestrians can cross the road without any problem – it wouldn't be possible in Japan! And tram runs punctually across the town – it was so convenient.

バーゼルからバスで30分ほどのところにあるヴイトラ。（ここはドイツなので、スイスフランではなくユーロが必要。バスもユーロで支払いするよう求められるので要注意！）美術館ではブラジルのカンパーナ兄弟の展覧会が開催中。
工場の敷地内には、フランク・ゲーリー、ザハ・ハディッド、安藤忠雄といった名だたる建築家による建物があり、毎日11:00、13:00、15:00から英語とドイツ語で建築ツアーがあります。この日のツアーは参加者が少なかった（といっても15人ほど）ので、ショールームではヴィトラで作られている椅子に座らせてもらえました！

Vitra Design Museum
It is only 30-minute bus ride from Basel. (Warning: Vitra is in Germany so bus fares must be paid in Euros, not Swiss francs!) Exhibition of Brazilian design duo Campana brothers were on.
In the site of the museum, there are buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Tadao Ando. The architect tour is available at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 and visitors can go inside of those buildings to explore. Our tour had not many people (about 15), so we had time in Vitra showroom to try their furniture!

ベイラー財団美術館
ヴィトラからバスで15分ほど。モネ、ジャコメッティ、ニューマンらの大作が並ぶ常設展に加え、ジェニー・ホルツァーの展覧会をやっていました。建物の設計はレンゾ・ピアノ。
自然に囲まれたこんなのどかな場所にこれだけのコレクションを揃えた美術館があるってことがすごい。

Beyeler Museum
It is about 15-minute bus ride from Vitra. In addition to general exhibition filled with Monet, Giacometti and Newman, special exhibition of Jenny Holzer was on. The building is designed by Renzo Piano.
It was amazing to see this huge collection of big name artists in the middle of nowhere...

今日のベルリン散策はミース・ファン・デル・ローエによるニューナショナルギャラリーから。地上階ではドイツ出身の写真家トーマス・デマンド、地下ではシュルレアリスムから抽象表現主義までの流れにそった展示でした。作品の豊富さがすごかった。私の理想の美術館。

I started my day with Neue Nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe. On the ground floor, there was an exhibition by photographer Thomas Demand, and the exhibition downstairs was featured a huge collection from Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism. I think this is my ideal museum - great architect, exhibition space and amazing collection!

ハンブルガー・バーンホフ美術館
これまた特大の現代美術館。フロントから見ると分からないけれど、数百メートルほどの長いスペースが延々と奥に伸びています。もと駅だった建物を改装していて、その名残が感じられるのも素敵。
美術館の中の作品は基本的に写真撮影OKというのも、まあびっくり。
入ってすぐの巨大スペースにデュシャンの車輪があるのが粋ですね。

This is a huge museum. It doesn't look so big from outside but at the back it has a few hundred meter long annexed building. The building used to be a station, which has unique feeling.
I loved the way Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel installed in the huge hall.

Day 2: Wolfsburg

ベルリンから特急で約1時間半、ヴォルフスブルクへ。フォルクスワーゲンの本社がある街だそうで、駅前には巨大な工場が。自動車のテーマパーク、アウトシュタットが有名だそうです。残念ながら時間がなくて中までは入れなかったけど、きっと自動車好きには夢の国。

Just one and half hour train journey from Berlin, I went to Wolfsburg. It is the hometown of Volkswagen and there is a huge VW factory by the station. The town is famous for Autostadt, car theme park by Volkswagen Group. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to walk in but surely it is a dream land for car lovers...

今回この街に来た一番の目的は、ジェームズ・タレルの展覧会を見るためでした。決して安くはなかった電車賃でしたが、その価値あり。ヴォルフスブルク美術館での巨大なインスタレーションは、どう表現すれば良いのやら。

My reason for visiting this town was to see James Turrell's exhibition at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. Turrell's gigantic installation had more volume and depth compare to his work in Naoshima. I was stunned. I don't know how to explain but it is something that you have to be there to really understand.

そして、ザハ・ハディッドデザインの科学博物館フェーノへ。平衡感覚を狂わせてくれる建物も面白ければ、ハンズオンの展示も楽しめる。「空飛ぶじゅうたん」までありました。
青い眼の親と茶色の眼の親から生まれる子どもは、50％が茶、37.5％が緑、12.5％が青、なんてことも学んだり。

The science museum Phæno designed by Zaha Hadid was amazing, too. The building throws us off balance - walls are sloped inwards or outwards. I loved all hands-on exhibits.
A child of one blue eyed parent and one brown eyed parent has a 50% chance of being brown eyed, 37.5% green and 12.5% blue. I learnt a new thing...

ベルリン→バーゼル→ロンドンへの11日間の旅。
心配していたブリティッシュエアウィズのストも回避（延期？）されて、予定通りに成田を出発。
元旦の夜のベルリンの通りはひっそりしてました・・・。
ベルリンではKu' Damm 101 Hotelにステイしました。
市街地からちょっと西にあるデザイナーズホテルで、もとオフィスか何かの建物を改装したようなレイアウト。天井がとても高い。そして超ミニマルで居心地が良い。しかもお手ごろ価格。

11 days holiday in Europe- I visited Berlin, Basel and London! Thanks to British Airways postponing the strike, our flight left Japan on schedule. The streets in Berlin were quiet at the night of the New Year's day...
I stayed at Ku' Damm 101 Hotel, west side of the town. It is a nicely designed hotel - very clean, minimal and affordable.

No Man's Land

広尾のフランス大使館の旧庁舎では、取り壊されてしまう前の建物を開放し、アーティストによるインスタレーション「No Man's Land」が開催されています。とても有意義なプロジェクトではあるけれど、死んでいく古びた建物のマイナスな雰囲気と、やっつけ感のある作品たち・・・。ごちゃごちゃしていて、どの部屋を誰が制作したのかすら分かりづらかったけど、それはそれで楽しかったかな。

"No Man's Land" art installation is held at the previous French Embassy office building in Hiroo. Although it is meaningful project, the dying old building had kind of negative atmosphere and some of the artworks were bit too "temporary". It was messy and wasn't clear who made which room, but I enjoyed this chaotic installation.

Taka Ishii Gallery

清澄白河の倉庫のギャラリーのほとんどが展示入替え期間中でしたが、唯一オープンしていたTaka Ishii Galleryではアラーキーの「遺作空2」展が。アラキネマと呼ばれる、アラーキーの写真を映像化した作品もあって見ごたえあり。
白黒写真と、その上にコラージュやペイントがされているもので、かなりの数の作品が展示されていました。「アラーキー作品は好きじゃないかも」と思ってたけど、ちょっと考えが変わりました。

A lot of galleries are closed in the warehouse of Kiyosumi Shirakaw because they were in between the exhibitions. Taka Ishii Gallery was only one opened and had Nobuyoshi Araki's “2THESKY, my Ender” exhibition on. The screening of Arakinema, film/slide show of Araki's work, were shown, too.
There are dozens of black and white photos as well as photos coupled with calligraphy, painting and collage displayed. I always thought I dislike his work but I changed my mind after seeing this exhibition.

根津美術館 / Nezu Museum

今年10月にリニューアルオープンした根津美術館。「根津青山の茶の湯」展の最終日で、私はお茶とかその道具とかにそれほど興味はないのだけれど、隈研吾さんが設計した建物を見に行ってきました。
しかし何よりもびっくりしたのが、美術館の裏にあるお庭です。けっこう広い敷地を散策できるようになっていて、趣きのある茶室も何軒かあり、ここが青山だなんて信じられない日本的空間が広がっています。かなりおすすめ。

I went to the Nuzu Museum, which reopened last October. I'm not a particularly big fan of Japanese tea culture but wanted to check out the new building designed by Kengo Kuma.
I was surprised by the museum garden. Behind the museum, there is a huge Japanese garden where visitors can walk around. There are a few tea houses including the boat which has tea room on the pond. I couldn't believe this is in Aoyama – it is definitely worth visiting!

東京国立近代美術館 / MOMAT

皇居の近くにある東京国立近代美術館。本館には行ったことがあったけど、今日ははじめて工芸館へ。
明治43年(1910年)に建てられた軍の建物を、1970年代に改修して美術館にしたそうです。展示室にある和室と床の間は、改修を手がけた谷口吉郎（MOMAの新館をデザインした谷口吉生のお父さん）がこだわったそうで、ホワイトキューブとは違った趣きのある部屋になっています。
工芸というとじじくさいイメージがあったんだけど、開催中の「現代工芸への視点―装飾の力」展では、若手作家の作品を装飾という視点からとりあげていて、現代アートとして面白かったです。しかし東京には美術館が本当にたくさんあるけど、国立美術館とか名前がややこしすぎるのが難点ですね。

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) stands near Imperial Palace. The museum consists of two buildings, Art Museum and Craft Gallery. This Craft Gallery was built in 1910 and was renovated as a museum in the 1970s by Yoshiro Taniguchi, father of Yoshio Taniguchi who designed the new MOMA building in NY.
"The Power of Decoration" exhibition is on at the moment focusing on young Japanese artists. It was interesting as a contemporary art exhibition.

Mori Museum

森美術館では「医学と芸術展」が開催中。医学という視点から芸術をとらえた展覧会で、中世の解剖学的な絵からDNA操作によって生まれた緑に光るウサギまで、奥が深い。
展覧会のテーマ設定としては面白かったけれど、うーむ。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが描いた解剖図が芸術なのか、というと私はそうではないと思うし、資料として見るべき作品が多くてそれは確かにすごいと思うけれど、何かを見て感動したという気持ちに私はなれなかったです。
同時に開催されているテレルヴォ・カルレイネンとオリヴァー・コフタ＝カルレイネンの「不平の合唱団」プロジェクトは、ヘルシンキ、シンガポール、東京などの都市で人々が不平不満を合唱している様子を映像にしたもの。でも悲壮感のただようものではなく、力強くコミカルに歌い上げているから、クスッと笑えました。

I went to see the "Medicine and Art" exhibition at Mori Museum. There were various works on display raging from anatomical charts from the middle ages to a documentary film about a genetically modified rabbit that glows green under certain light.
It was an interesting theme for the exhibition but the anatomical drawings of Leonardo da Vinci aren't art in my opinion. There were so many interesting medical data and materials in the exhibition, however, a lot of exhibits didn't move me much.
The film “Complaints Choir” by Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen was also shown. Local people in Helsinki, Singapore and Tokyo sang a song about their complaints as a choir. People complained about small sweet things, it was quite funny.

歌舞伎 / Kabuki

今日は銀座の歌舞伎座へ。かなり昔に学校の社会見学で鑑賞して以来、10数年ぶりの歌舞伎。その時は激しく眠ってしまった記憶がありますが、歳をとって見てみると「歌舞伎ってこんなに面白かったんだ！」と再発見。
「十二月大歌舞伎」は3つのパートに分かれていて、最初は古典的ないわゆる”歌舞伎”、次は踊りが中心、そして最後は野田秀樹作・演出の「野田版鼠小僧」という現代的な演目です。（こんな説明の仕方でいいのかな？）計4時間ほどでしたが、あっという間でした。
「野田版鼠小僧」は舞台のセットや演出がとにかくスペクタクル。伝統を保っていながらそれだけにおさまらず、現代の笑いや感性に響くもので、想像していた堅苦しい歌舞伎とは全く違いました。
「一幕見席」という当日券があるので、自分の見たい演目だけ見るのもOK。敷居が高いと勝手に思っていたけど、歌舞伎って意外に身近なものなんですね。

I went to see kabuki. The last time I saw kabuki was more than 10 years ago as a part of a school event. I remember falling asleep during the play back then but this time, I am mature enough to appreciate it!
This month's performance has three parts. The first part is traditional kabuki, then dance performance, and the last part is contemporary kabuki "The Story of the Thief Nezumi Kozo" directed by Hideki Noda. "Nezumi Kozo" was so spectacular – an amazing stage set and effects. It goes for 4 hours in total but time goes so quick!
Audio guides that explain the performance in English are available. Some tickets are sold on the day of the performance at a good price. I always thought kabuki was difficult and snobby, but it is far more approachable than I expected.

写美 / Museum of Photography

東京都写真美術館では「木村伊兵衛とアンリ・カルティエ=ブレッソン」展が開催中。二人の作品の違いを楽しみながら鑑賞できます。作品数も多く、見応えあり。
私はカルティエ=ブレッソンの写真がとてもとても好きです。遊び心が感じられる写真、ものすごいバランスで成り立っている写真（森村泰昌の『美術の解剖学講義』に面白い解説が）、そして”決定的瞬間”をとらえた写真。どの作品もとにかく息をのむ美しさで、そして完璧に美しいと思います。

"Ihee Kimura & Henri Cartier-Bresson: Eastern Eye & Western Eye" exhibition is on at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. The two photographers works were displayed in the same room au that we can compare them.
I really really love Cartier-Bresson's photos. They are witty and perfectly composed as well as capturing the "The Decisive Moment". For me, they are the most beautiful photos and the perfect photos...

東京都現代美術館ではドイツのアーティスト「レベッカ・ホルン展」と、17世紀以降のハイ・ファッションに焦点をあてた「ラグジュアリー：ファッションの欲望」展が開催中です。妹島和世によるコム・デ・ギャルソンの洋服のインスタレーションや、スウェーデンのファッションの展示もあって、とにかく盛りだくさん。
特に私がいいなと思ったのが「レベッカ・ホルン展」。何が起こるかワクワクしながら、色んな仕掛けがある作品の前にたたずむことができます。映像作品はけっこう長かった(1時間くらいのものが何本か上映されてました)ので、とても全部は見れなかったのが心残り。全部を楽しもうと思うと丸一日、必要ですな。

I went to see "Rebecca Horn" exhibition and "Luxuary" fashion exhibition at MOT today. The installation of Comme des Garçon dresses by Kazuyo Sejima at the big atrium and mannequin display by young Swedish fashion designers are also held. There were so much to see!
I really liked "Rebecca Horn" exhibition. It was exiting to see things happening in her artworks which had tricky mechanism. I stood in front of them for ages to find out the surprise. Her films were shown as well but they were quite long, each of them are over an hour, so it was shame that I couldn't see them all... You can spend a whole day there easy!

BankART 1929

横浜の旧市街地の倉庫だった建物をリノベーションしてアートプロジェクトの発信地にしているBankART 1929。と言われても？だったのだけど、実際に行ってみると、広い空間の中にアートの展示空間、バー/カフェ、ショップがあり、美術館のような存在。
11月末まではヨコハマ国際映像祭 CREAMの会場として、広い空間いっぱいに色んな国内外のアーティストの作品が上映されています。映像祭といっても作品の上映時間が決まっているわけではなく、自由に鑑賞可能。
BankART 1929は「すごくちゃんとオーガナイズされている」という言い方は上から目線で失礼かもだけれど、アーティストの支援をしながら、作り手と市民が交流できるような講座を開いたり、夜遅くまでオープンしている素敵バー/カフェがあったり、BankART 1929から出版されたアート関連の本がいっぱいのショップがあったりと、市の施設とは思えない充実ぶりです。その上、若い人を中心にちゃんと人が集まっているというのはすごいこと。
「楽しいことが起こっている」感があって、ものすごく勢いのある場所でした。

BankART 1929 is "a Yokohama City project designed to revitalize the heart of the city by utilizing refurbished historical city buildings for the development of contemporary culture and the arts." I didn't quite understand what it meant, but it is basically a museum-like place with exhibition space, a cafe/bar and a shop.
Till the end of November, CREAM, the International Festival for Arts and Media Yokohama 2009, is held at the site. A lot of short films were shown in the huge ex-warehouse space.
BankART 1929 is a municipal project but is really well organized. The exhibition space holds various exhibitions and events that make locals feel familiar to art and the site as well as supporting artists, nicely designed cafe/bar opens till late at night so locals can drop n for a drink, and the shop provides many art related bilingual books published by the project.
This place has a good vive.

今年はまだ色づいていない外苑前の銀杏並木を通り抜け、100% Design Tokyoへ。ここは展示している量がものすごい。来場者の数もすごくてチケット売り場には大行列ができているので、行く人は覚悟が必要です。
オーストリアをはじめとする海外のデザイナー、日本の家電メーカーや伝統工芸の工場、大学生の作品まで本当に幅広いプロダクトが展示されていました。

There are various exhibitors such as designers form overseas, Japanese electrical appliance manufacture, traditional crafts maker and university students...

六本木ミッドタウンのDesign Touchでは、カリフォルニアのデザインファームIDEOのプロダクトが展示されていました。浄水システムを搭載した自転車や、ブタの貯金箱のかたちをしたソーラーパネルなど、心ひかれるものがたくさん。
そして外の芝生ではDesign Touchの一環として、気球がひっそりと上げられていました・・・。

IDEO's products are displayed at Design Touch in Tokyo Midtown. Aquaduct - a bicycle with water purifying system - are shown the first time in Japan. And I loved "Daylight Savings Pig". It collects sunlight via solar panel - great tool for kids to learn eco.

今年も六本木ミッドタウンで開催のDesign Tide Tokyo 2009。雲がかかった会場は素敵なんだけれど、歩きにくいのとブースを見にくいのが玉にきずでしたが、「今」のデザインが凝縮されています。
今年はソウルとベルリンからのデザイナーがグループで出展していたりと、よりインターナショナル。デザイナーさんが立っているブースもあり、つくった人の声を聞けるので楽しいですよ。

Design Tide Tokyo 2009 is on till 2/November. Exhibition hall is covered by cloud-like material was good, but it was difficult to walk around, however, it held good collection of new exiting design products.
It was more international this year – there are groups of young designers from Seoul and Berlin exhibition. Some of the designer are actually standing at the booth so it was nice to talk to them and hear what the products are about!

Mori Museum

森美術館で11/8まで開催中の「アイ・ウェイウェイ展」へ。名前からしてなんとなく中国のアートの展示会だと思っていたけれど、思いっきり現代アートでした。
ミニマルアートを思わせるインスタレーションも、中国の文化を通して自分の中で消化して再び提示していたり、デザインや手工芸の技術を融合してアートに組み替えかえていたり、作品の背後にあるコンセプトがするすると伝わってきました。例えば、外国で暮らすとその国にとけ込むように自分を組み替えることがあると思うんだけれど、そんな要領で色んなものを融合するのがアイ・ウェイウェイって人はお上手だと思いました。
「1001人の中国人をドイツのカッセルに連れて行く」というプロジェクトの映像は、中国もドイツも色んな人がいて色んな考えを持っていて、その中で社会っていうものは成り立っているんだ、ということが感じられたドキュメンタリーでした。

I went to see the "Ai Wei Wei" exhibition at Mori Museum. When I first heard about the exhibition, I thought it would be all about Chinese art but it was actually contemporary art.
Ai Wei Wei's installations reminded me a lot about minimal art, but he takes a Chinese perspective or design/craft method and alters it. I thought it is similar to when you live abroad, you try to fit into the culture by altering yourself. Ai Wei Wei is good at reinterpreting things.
There is a documentary film about an art project called "Fairytail" which is about taking 1001 Chinese people to Kassel, Germany. It shown one society consists on so many different opinions and it was fascinating to see.

「大阪」のイメージといえば食べ物とか、吉本のお笑い、日本で2番目の都市とかですが、建築やデザイン、ショッピングという点でも、意外と見所はたくさんあります。そういうところがカバーされているガイドブック、特に英語のものは今までなかったので「京都に行くついでに大阪に寄ったけど、何を見ていいか分からなかった」という人は多いはず。「観光名所に行くだけじゃなくて、クールな大阪が見たい！」という人はぜひぜひ。

Osaka is underestimated. The city has a reputation for food and business, and it's Japan's second city, however, there is a lot more to this place - including great architecture, well-designed products and interiors and excellent shops.
A lot of people go to Osaka on the way to Kyoto and have trouble finding anything amazing - until now there hasn't been a guide book about the real Osaka.

戸倉三山 / Tokura 3-mountain range

今日は奥多摩の臼杵山(うすぎさん)・市道山(いちみちやま)・刈寄山(かりよりやま)からなる戸倉三山+今熊山(いまくまさん)へハイキング。約6時間で制覇。高尾山と違い、すれ違う人もまばらでした。
下調べでは「アップダウンが多いが展望は良くない」ということだったんだけど、特に荷子田峠〜臼杵山〜市道山までは山登り初心者にとっては”急勾配”の部類に入るルートです。標識もあまりないので「本当にここであってるの？」と疑いながら突き進みました。
市道山〜刈寄山の間ではトレイルのすぐ側で、巣穴で眠る熊を発見！穴があったので「こういう所に熊がいるんだよね〜」と知ったかぶりをしたら、本当にいた！それからは何を見ても「熊？」と疑心暗鬼で、鳥の物音を聞いては叫び、蛇を見ては叫び・・・。東京にも熊はいるんですね・・・。今度からは、熊よけの鈴を持とうと思いました。色々とハードルは高かったけれど、冒険気分が味わえて楽しい、というか充実したハイキングでした。

I went hiking in the Tokura mountain range (Mt.Usugi, Mt.Ichimichi and Mt.Kariyori) and Mt.Imakuma. It took 6 hours to complete. And there weren't many people on the way - we saw only 10 hikers.
The trails were said to involve "a lot of ups and downs but not very good views", however, especially the trails between Mt.Usugi and Mt.Ichimichi were actually very steep. There weren't many signposts - almost none in English - so I wasn't sure if I was going the right way.
Anyway, the highlight of today was seeing a bear (maybe bears) sleeping in their den! I saw a hole at the side of the trail and I joked "there could be a bear inside" and when looked inside, there was a bear! I got so scared and after that, I was spooked by every noise I heard... It come to me a big surprised to learn there are bears in Tokyo!!! I have to get more prepared for it next time.
It was an enjoyable hike...

光の教会 / The Church of The Light

大阪・茨木にある安藤忠雄建築・光の教会。私が行ったの2年前の夏は、心付けを残せば自由に見学できたんだけど、今は事前に予約が必要みたいです。JR茨木駅からさらにバス、そして住宅地のど真ん中にある小さな教会。
外から見るとごく普通のコンクリートのブロックだけど、一歩中に足を踏み入れると、十字架のかたちをした窓ガラスから光が差し込んだ室内には圧倒的な存在感と、厳かな空気が漂っています。
今月号のCasa Brutusが安藤さん特集で、付録で付いていたDVDをついさっき見て、この教会のことを思い出しました。

The Church of The Light must be the one of the most famous churches in Japan. It is a short bus ride from Ibaraki Station, Osaka. Visitors have to book in advance to see inside.
It is just a small concrete building from outside but when you go in, it is another world. The light shone into the room through the cross shaped window and it feels so sublime (even though I am not Christian...).
I was watching DVD about Ando, which came with this month's Casa Brutus magazine. And it reminded me of this church.

東京都現代美術館では「メアリー・ブレア展」が人気のようでしたが、「伊藤公象展」と常設コレクションの「夏の遊び場」は本当に良かったです。
「伊藤公象展」は空間全体をつかって作品が表現されていて、うねうねとした感じとか、大量に並べられてる感じとか、私はおへそがむずむずしました。
「夏の遊び場」は夏休みの子ども向けにアレンジした展示になっていて、現代美術って面白いでしょ？ということを伝えようとしています。
どちらも、かなりオススメ。

"Mary Blair" exhibition is very popular at MOT, but "Kosho Ito" exhibition and "Summer Playground" exhibition showing MOT's collection are must-sees!
Kosho Ito, Japanese artist displayed his work by himself so the whole space became a part of his art. His small pieces of clay work that turns and twists were arranged one after another. It was magnificent!
"Summer Playground" is targeting kids who are on summer holiday. It trying to teach kids how fun contemporary art could be.
These exhibitions are worth checking out!

東京ドームでの阪神vs巨人のチケットをいただいたので、見に行ってきました。国歌より先に六甲おろしを習った神戸出身の私。今日は20数年ぶりに歌ったけれど、歌詞を覚えていた自分にビックリです。
試合は5-2で阪神の勝ち！バース、掛布、真弓、岡田世代の私からすると知らない選手の方が多かったけれど、手の平が痛くなるくらい手を叩いて応援してしました。また見に行ってみようかな・・・。

I was given a ticket for Hanshin Tigers vs Yomiuri Giants baseball match so went to see it today. Coming from Kobe, I learnt "Rokko oroshi", Tiger's team song before national anthem and I was surprised that I could still sing it after 20 something years.
Tigers won 5-2! I don't know many players now as I am an "old" fan but I really got into the game! I would like to go back there or maybe go to Koshien, Tiger's home ground one day...

府中市美術館 / Fuchu Art Museum

学校の授業で府中市美術館を見学。夏休み中とあって子ども向けの展示をしていたのですが、驚愕・・・。これがすごいのです！
展示している作品自体は静物画だったり、抽象画だったりと、まあ普通。でも子ども向けに美術館を探検できるように展示をつくってあって「この絵にはどんな動物がかくれている？」「聞こえるのはどんな音？」ととにかく想像力をあおったり、クイズに答えたり、お絵描きしたりと、楽しみながら学べる工夫が盛りだくさん。
小学生以上の子どもがいる人には絶対にオススメです。

I went to Fuchu Art Museum. The exhibition was composed for kids who are on summer holiday in Japan. And it was surprisingly good.
The paintings such as landscapes, still lifes or ukiyoe were nothing special but I was amazed by how they were presented. There are questions on the panels hung next to the paintings asking "Which animal is hiding in this landscape?" or "What can you hear from this painting?" to provoke kid's interest. I normally hate the immatureness of Japanese culture but this exhibition actually works as art education for kids and maybe for adults, too.
I definitely recommend families visit here. It is all in Japanese but...

小山登美夫ギャラリーで開催中の「建築以前・建築以後」展へ。
菊竹清訓→伊藤豊雄→SANAA、という流れが勉強できます。私は建築家じゃないので専門的なことはよく分からないけれど、菊竹さんの1950年代に建てた事務所を紹介した古い映像や、SANAAが金沢21世紀美術館をパズルみたいなやり方で考えている映像とか、建物から生まれるストーリー、建物にまつわるストーリーは面白かったです。
hiromi yoshii ギャラリーでも若手建築家さんのつくった模型が展示されていました。日本の建築は今、盛り上がっています。私は家が欲しいです・・・。

I went to see the "Before Architecture, After Architecture" exhibition at the Tomio Koyama Gallery.
I learnt about the influences that flow from Kiyonori Kikutake→Toyo Ito→SANAA. I'm not an architect so couldn't understand the technical side of the exhibition. But the films about those architects, Kikutake's office in 1950's or SANAA shaping Kanazawa 21st Century Museum were fascinating.
hiromi yoshii gallery also held a display of models made by upcoming architects. I think Japanese architecture scene is at fever pitch. And I would love to buy a house...

地中美術館 / Chichu Museum

安藤忠雄が直島に埋め込んだ美術館で、クロード・モネ、ウォルター・デ・マリア、ジェームズ・タレルという3人のアーティストの作品が永久展示されています。
今のところ、私が世界で一番好きな美術館です。

Chichu Museum does not allow you to take any photograph even of the building.
Tadao Ando designed this museum and buried it underground. Claude Monet, Walter De Maria and James Turrell's artworks are on permanent display and Ando's building itself is considered to be one of its pieces.
This is my favourite museum in the world for now.

家プロジェクト / House Project

直島の「家プロジェクト」は、アーティストが古い一軒の民家を再生して空間をつくりあげているもので、今は7軒が公開されています。
私のアート観を変えたジェームス・タレル×安藤忠雄の『南寺』(写真上) にも再び訪れたけどやはり衝撃的です。暗闇の中に座ってじーっと前を見つめていると、だんだんと浮かび上がってくる光。3年前はもっと自由に鑑賞することができたのが、大勢の来館者をさばくためか、今は15分ずつの入換え制になっているのが少し残念だけど。
内藤礼の『ぎんざ』は予約が必要なのですが、当日に電話してみるとたまたまキャンセルが出たそうで、なんともラッキーなことに見ることができました。ここも15分間、一人で建物の中に入ってじーっと眺める。ひたすら眺める。そうすると、だんだんいろんなディテールが次々と見えてくる。
いやはや。アート空間を体験できるってほんとに楽しい。

There are 7 House Projects in Naoshima now. Artists renovated old houses and installed their works in them.
James Turrell's "Minami Dera" (pictured above) was the first to make me my appreciate the art. I visited the house again and was as amazing as I remembered. It was shame that now we have only 15mins to spend inside in order to deal with many visitors. It was more relaxed three years ago.
To visit Rei Naito's "Ginza", visitors have to make an appointment. I rang them on the day to see if it was possible to have a look and luckily, they had a cancellation! Only one person is allowed to go in the house and spend 15mins in there. I was surprised that I saw more and more things as the time goes.
I loved all the houses! It is about experience not only viewing.

直島 / Naoshima

直島日帰り旅行！直島には2010年の瀬戸内国際芸術祭に向けて、新しいアートプロジェクトや美術館が次々に増えています。ちなみに去年1年間に35万人もの人がこの小さな島に訪れたそう。
私は今回が3年ぶり2度目の訪問で、新しい作品や前回は台風のせいで撤去されていて見れなかった作品を中心に見て回ることに。宮浦港のフェリーターミナルで自転車を借りて、炎天下の中をサイクリング。電動自転車もあったけど全て貸出し中で、ギアなしのママチャリだったので、坂道はちょっとキツかった・・・。
地中美術館→ベネッセハウスの周りのアート巡り→家プロジェクト、の順で回ったけど、どれもこれもファンタスティックー！時間が足りなくて最後は駆け足だったけど、2010年の芸術祭にはもっとじっくり見て回るつもり。楽しみです。

I took a day trip to Naoshima! A lot of art projects and artworks are being installed for Setouchi Art Festival 2010. Around 350,000 people visited this tiny island last year.
This was my second visit – I was there 3 years ago, but some artworks had to be removed due to an impending typhoon back then. So this time, I was able to visit the artworks I couldn't see last time as well as some new ones.
I hired a bicycle at the ferry terminal (¥500/day). Electric bicycles are available (¥2000/day) but they were all taken. It was fun but a hard job cycling under 30C sunshine...
My course was:

I had half a day only this time so I had to rush a little. I'll go back there properly for the 2010 art festival!

キナーレ / Kinare

十日町にある越後妻有交流館キナーレ。トリエンナーレではメイン会場になるみたいです。
原広司さんの設計で、原さんというと京都駅や札幌ドームみたいなゴツイ建物を思い浮かぶのだけれど、ここはコンクリートでミニマルな感じ。かなり大きな中央広場には水がわき出ていて、保育園の子ども達が遊んでいました。他にはきもの博物館や工芸館も。
つい先日、トリエンナーレのオーガナイザー北川フラムさんの講演を聞きに行ったとき「切り捨てられてきた農業地域、高齢化・過疎化した地域をアートを通じて活性化している」という趣旨のことを話されていましたが、今年は新潟の日本海沿岸でも水と土の芸術祭が開催されるようです。こういうアートプロジェクトで、街に勢いがつくと良いですね！

Kinare is near Tokamachi station, which is going to be a hub centre for Echigo Tsumari Art Triennial.
The building is designed by Hiroshi Hara, but unlike his other projects such as Kyoto station or Sapporo Dome, this place is minimal, much cleaner and simpler. There is a water area in courtyard where kids were playing.
I went to hear the speech by Furamu Kitagawa the other day and he was explaining how they were trying to revitalize the local area where rapidly aging and depopulation is increasing. This year another art event will be held Japan sea side of Niigata. I hope these art projects will be successful and tie to local people!

光のプログラム / Outside In

梅雨にもかかわらず、東京を出発した朝には雨だったにもかかわらず、ジェームス・タレルの「光のプログラム」を体験できたのは、ラッキーとしか言いようがない！
光の館の一室の天井は開閉できるようになっていて、日没・日の出の1時間にうつろう空の様子を、タレルの光とともに味わえます。(雨天の場合は天井の開閉は不可！) オレンジがかった照明のもとでは、実際の空の色よりも深い青に見えて、色がゆっくりと変化していきました。
そして日没のプログラムが終わってすべての照明を消すと、そこには満点の星が見える、というサプライズも。夏至に近いこの季節、日の出のプログラムは午前3:09からと早起きが必要だったけれど、たまには早起きも悪くない。

Even though it is currently the rainy season, and even though it actually rained hard when we were leaving Tokyo to come here, we were lucky enough to be able to experience James Turrell's "Outside In" lighting programme at House of Light.
In the main room of the House of Light, we were able to open up the ceiling to see the colour of the sky change. (If it was raining, we wouldn't have been able to open the ceiling!) Under Turrell's orange ceiling light arrangement, the sky looked deeper and bluer than it actually was and changed slowly its colour.
When the programme finished at sunset and it was dark, we were able to see millions of stars. It was a wonderful surprise. As we are coming up to the summer solstice, we had to wake up at 3:09am to see the programme again at sunrise, but it wasn't too bad to start the day at daybreak and see the wonderful light show once again.

光の館 / House of Light

ジェームス・タレルの光のアートを体験できる宿泊施設、光の館。少人数での予約は他のグループとのシェアになることもあるらしいけれど、トリエンナーレ前ということもあって予約が重ならず、二人だけで独占してしまいました！夜は管理人さんも帰ってしまい、宿泊者だけが山中に取り残されるので、本当に孤立した気分が味わえます。
光の館にはタレルの作品があちこちにあります。外は真っ暗なので、光がより鮮明に感じられる。特に夜のお風呂は水の中からタレルの光が浮かび上がってきて感動的です。日没・日の出の時間帯の「光のプログラム」は、今まで見たり体験したりしたどんなアートよりも心に響きました。

House of Light is a guesthouse where visitors can experience artwork of James Turrell. We were very lucky to have whole place by two of us – you might have to share the building with another group of people if a booking has been made. We were left alone in this house on top of the hill at night so it was scary isolated!
There are a few art works by Turrell in the building. It was nice to experience his lighting float in the water in the bathroom at night. The light programme "Outside In" at sunset and sunrise was the best artwork I've ever seen in my life!

まつだい農舞台 / Matsudai-Nobutai

まつだい農舞台の敷地には30以上のアート作品が展示されています。斜面に重なる棚田の側を歩いていると、カエルやトンボ、野うさぎなどにも出会えて、土地とか自然とかと一体になってアートが存在しているのが感じられます。全作品を制覇するのに炎天下のなか2時間は歩くことになってしまい、かなりへとへとになりました。
2003年に設置されてからしばらく経っているので、ちょっと色褪せたり、草に埋もれそうになっている作品もあって、ミュージアムの中で保護されたのとは違う荒っぽさが良いですね。

There are more than 30 art works installed in Matsudai-Nobutai Art site. The works stand in middle of "tanada" terraced rice field so I found frogs, dragonflies and a rabbit along the trail. It was nice to feel art in the nature but to see them all, I had to walk two hours under strong sunshine and heat!
Since they were installed in 2003, some of the art got faded or covered by weeds, but they are wild unlike the ones protected in the museums.

まつだい雪国農耕文化村センター / Matsudai Art Centre

今年7月から開催される妻有アートトリエンナーレの会場にもなっているまつだい雪国農耕文化村センターは、その名前からは想像できないようなとても素敵なミュージアムです。オランダの建築家集団MVRDVによるデザインで、カフェは水色、ショップは黄緑、トイレはオレンジというように建物の中が色分けされています。一度入ったら出られない(ような気になる)トイレは必見。
越後湯沢駅からほくほく線で数十分という、ちょっとへんぴな場所に突如あらわれる非日常的なアート空間。トリエンナーレの作品が展示されている場所は車でしか行けないようなところが多いのだけれど、ここは駅からすぐなので良いです。思わぬ発見でした！

This Art Centre in Matsudai-Nobutai is designed by MVRDV, which is going to be one of the main sites during Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial. Inside the building, all the rooms are colour coded according to their use, blue for the cafe, green for the shop, and orange for the toilet. The toilet here is amazing- I couldn't find the way out and got really panicked!
It is in an out-of-the way location, 45mins local train ride from Echigo-Yuzawa. There are many Triennial sites that are hard to get to without a car, but here we can at least visit by a train. It was a good surprise to find out about this place!

東京都現代美術館で見て以来の岡本太郎『明日の神話』。渋谷マークシティ2Fの、ものすごく人通りの多い連絡通路にありました。そしてガラスの外には渋谷交差点が・・・。

Taro Okamoto's "Myth of Tomorrow" is now displayed along the skybridge in Shibuya Mark City. It's been there since last November but I finally checked it yesterday. We can see the famous Shibuya crossing outside of the window. There are always so many people... too many.

だまし絵展 @Bunkamura

渋谷Bunkamuraで開催中の『奇想の王国だまし絵展』へ。あのアルチンボルドの『ウェルトゥムヌス（ルドルフ2世）』が初来日ということで、感激・・・。
どの作品もすごく良いのだけど、難しい話はぬきにして見ていて純粋に面白い。「あー！」「おぉ！」という声が色んなところからあがっていました。西洋のトロンプルイユ、日本のだまし絵、さらには20世紀以降のものなど、それぞれを比較できるのでお勉強にもなります。

"Visual Deception" exhibition is on at Bunkamura in Shibuya. It is the first time for "Vertumnus/Rudolf II" by Arcimboldo to come to Japan. I am overwhelmed... I never thought I could see his painting in real life.
Every paintings are great and it is big fun to watch them. Everybody couldn't stop "Ah!" or "Oh!" in front of each work. There were various works exhibited from classic trompe-l’oeil to modern artists so you can learn a lot about it. I absolutely loved this exhibition!

高橋理子さんの着物のエキシビジョンtransformが原宿のRocketにて開催中。キャットストリートから路地に入ったところにある小さなギャラリーです。
浴衣を最後に着たのは10年前、着物も結婚式でしか着たことのない私ですが、高橋さんのグラフィカルな着物はとても素敵だと思う。着物っていうといかにも「和」というものが多くて、それはそれでいいんだけれど、ここには着物の新しい可能性みたいなものがあります。とにかくとにかく、かっこいい。

Hiroko Takahashi's kimono exhibition "Transform" is held at Rocket in Harajuku. It is a small gallery just off Cat Street.
The last time I wore yukata (casual kimono for summer) was 10 years ago and I have only worn a kimono twicein my life, both times at a wedding. But even I can tell that Takahashi's graphical kimonos are outstanding. Kimono is often cliched and styled to look very Japanese. But you can see something new and extraordinary in her kimono. I believe Takahashi is one artist who can really change kimono culture in future.

上野の森美術館で開催中のネオテニー・ジャパン―高橋コレクション展へ。奈良美智、村上隆といった日本人の現代アーティストの作品が絵画を中心に展示されていました。
細かいディデールに凝っていながら、子どもっぽくフラットな作品が全体的に多い気がしたけど、さわひらきのビデオ作品や、照屋勇賢のショッピングバッグから繊細な木をつくりだした作品など、素敵な出会いもあり。ネオテニーとは「幼形成熟」という意味らしく、子どもっぽさも納得。若者を中心にかなりの来場者がいたので、展覧会としては成功してるのかな。
帰り道には西郷さん像を10年ぶりくらいに見ました。

Neoteny Japan exhibition is held at The Ueno Royal Museum. The works of Japanese contemporary artist such as Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami are shown.
A lot of the exhibits are detailed but really immature and flat, lacking depth. But video art by Hiraki Sawa and miniature trees cut out from a luxury brand shopping bag (hard to explain, please check his website) by Yuen Teruya are really superb. There are many visitors so the exhibition must be going well.
And I saw the Takamori Saigo statue in Ueno Park. The last time I saw it was 10 yrs ago...

Mori Museum

森美術館で開催中の「万華鏡の視覚」展へ。タイトルは？な感じだけど、ジム・ランビーやイェッペ・ハイン、トレイシー・エミンなどの、光や音や色の現代美術が展示されていました。目で見て面白いスペクタクルな作品が多くて、とても楽しい。特にジョン・M・アームレーダーによる、12個のミラーボールをくるくるまわしている部屋は圧倒的！
しかも森美術館は夜遅くまでやっているので、平日の夕方は本当にゆっくり見れてGOOD。しかも東京の夜景までついてきて、さらに素晴らしい。

"The Kaleidoscopic Eye" exhibition is on at Mori Museum. The title didn't attract me much but this is contemporary art exhibition, which shows works by Tracey Emin, Jim Lambie and Jeppe Hein. The works were about "Light, color, sound...", very spectacular and fun to watch! Specially the room with 12 disco globes going around by John M Armleder was amazing.
Mori Museum is open till late night, so weekday evening is the best time to visit. It is quieter and on top of that, you get to see the glory Tokyo night view.

MILK

ショーン・ペンがオスカーを受賞したミルク。ハーヴィー・ミルクのことを何も知らずに見に行ったんだけど、号泣。滝のように涙が流れてきて大変でした。
私は今までゲイの人達の権利を当たり前のことだと思っていたけど、そこに至るまでには長い道のりがあったということを初めて知りました。よく考えてみれば、カリフォルニアでは2008年に同性婚の禁止が再び住民投票で可決されたりと、まだまだ平等とはとても言えない。映画はシリアスな話だけではなく、ミルクがとてもチャーミングに描かれていて、いろんな意味で素晴らしい映画でした。

I went to see MILK, it finally arrived in Japan. I didn't know anything about Harvey Milk but I cried and cried during the film.
I always thought gay right were a matter of course but it took a long hard journey to win their right. The film wasn't only serious, Milk was depicted charmingly. It was one of the best films I've ever seen.

Mark Rothko @Kawamura Museum

千葉県佐倉の川村記念美術館で開催中の『マーク・ロスコ瞑想する絵画』展。ロスコの巨大なぼんやりとした絵だけが15点ほど掲げられた部屋は圧巻でした・・・。瞑想するしかない感じ。ロスコが書いた手紙も公開されていて、そこには偉大な作品をつくる作家の人間としての弱さがにじみでていて、興味深い展示内容でした。
川村美術館の常設展も、レンブラント、ピカソ、マンレイなどなど、数は多くないけれどすごい名前がずらり。1990年に開館したそうですが、美術館の周りだけ違う空気が流れています。ほんとビックリ。

Mark Rothko exhibition is held at Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art in Sakura near Narita Airport. Fifteen huge obscure paintings by Rothko are displayed in one room, which was just breathtaking. All you need to do is "meditate" as the museum advice you to do. There are also letters by Rothko on the display, which shows the great artist also had weaknesses. It was a good exhibition!
The museum is miles away from Tokyo but has got amazing collection. In the permanent exhibition, there are big names such as Rembrandt, Picasso and Man Ray. It opened in 1990 and the museum stands out from its neighbourhood. It was a good surprise to find out about this place...

馬頭広重美術館 / Bato Hiroshige Museum

東京から電車とバスで片道4時間弱、遠路はるばる栃木県の那珂川町にある馬頭広重美術館へ。隈研吾さんがデザインした美術館そのものを見たかったのと、ちょうど「日本の四季　名所江戸百景展」をやっていたので行ってきました。
1850年頃に広重が描いた江戸の浮世絵が60枚（合計120枚のシリーズなのでちょうど半分）と、同じ場所の現在の東京の写真が一緒に展示されていて、たった150年の間に激しくかわった風景を比較できて面白かったです。あと、浮世絵がどういう流れで作られるかも詳しく説明されていて勉強になりました。
美術館の裏にはハイキングのコースみたいなのもあって楽しめます。那珂川町はちょっと遠かったけど行く価値アリ。

I went to the Bato Hiroshige Museum today. It took me nearly 4 hours from Tokyo by train and bus. I really wanted to see the museum designed by Kengo Kuma and "Four Seasons in Japan - One Hundred Famous Views of Edo " exhibition so made a trip to Nakagawa, Tochigi prefecture.
60 ukiyoe prints about the views of Edo (there are total of 120 prints in this Edo series) were displayed with the photos taken in the same place today. It showed how much Tokyo had changed in the last 150 years. I learnt a lot about ukiyoe, how prints are made and which tools craftsman use.
There is a nice hiking trail behind the museum. This museum is in middle of nowhere but it is worth visiting!

ワタリウム美術館で開催中の写真のエキシビジョン。マン・レイ、ウォーホール、ホルストなど、とても素敵なセレクション。それぞれの写真家ごとの展示作品が少ないのは残念だけど、まあ幅広く楽しめます。
ワタリウム美術館は今回はじめて行ったのですが、あまり大きくはないスペースの中に、ショップやカフェがあってとても面白い空間になっています。今日は平日だったせいか、フロアをほぼ独り占めできました。マリオ・ボッタによる建築らしいです。

I went to see "The Fallen Angels" exhibition at Watari-um Museum of Contemporary Art. It was about photography by such artist as Man Ray, Andy Warhol and Horst.P.Horst. There aren't many works by each photographer, but it was a good selection of important photographs.
This was my first time in Watari-um Museum. It is not a very big building but it contains a nice cafe and shop. Because today was a weekday, I enjoyed the whole space by myself. The building was designed by Mario Botta.

inochi @Kaikai Kiki Gallery

Kaikai Kiki Galleryで村上隆の『inochi』展が4/16まで開催中。村上さんご本人がギャラリーを横切るのを見てちょっとビックリ。
「iochiくん」というフィギュアそのものに加え、「inochiくん」というキャラクターを使ったCMやその制作過程、「inochiくん」を小さくしたフィギュアのおもちゃ（1体¥150,000）が展示されていました。プロジェクト、としてのアート、みたいなところでみせているのが面白かったです。

"inochi" exhibition by Takashi Murakami is held at Kaikai Kiki Gallery till 16/April. I saw Murakami walking across the gallery!
"inochi" is a character that Muarakami created. In the exhibition, inochi's figure was shown as well as the process of making a commercial which inoch appears, and miniature toys made from inochi (they sell these toys for ¥150,000). The exhibition was about a whole project. It was more than showing a piece of artwork. I don't generally like his work but this exhibition was really fascinating.

東京都庭園美術館 / Tokyo Teien Museum

東京都庭園美術館で開催中の『ポワレとフォルチュニィ』展へ。ポール・ポワレとマリアノ・フォルチュニィによる1910年代・20年代のドレスが展示されていました。が！すごく混んでいたのと、ぺちゃくちゃ話している人が多くて本当に残念。
ポワレは「コルセットから女性を解放したデザイナー」ですが、今回展示されていたドレスは特にオリエンタルなものからの影響が大きいことに驚きました。フォルチュニィのプリーツドレス「デルフォス」は、身体の線が出るため部屋着として初めは着られていたようですが、ものすごく繊細なプリーツはため息が出るような美しさ。
美術館の外の庭園には5つの彫刻と小さくまとまった日本庭園がありました。桜が咲き始めていてきれいでした。

"Paul Poiret and Mariano Fortuny" is held at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. Dresses made in 1910's and 20's are displayed. Unfortunately the rooms were really crowded and people were talking loudly. I think I came here on the wrong day...
Anyway I was surprised by the oriental influence on Poiret who is famous for freeing women from corsets. And this was my first time to see Fortuny's Delphos gown. His pleated gowns are so delicate and beautiful.
There is a garden outside of the museum and five sculptures were displayed. The garden is not so impressive but the blooming cherry blossoms made it look beautiful.

東京マラソン / Tokyo Marathon

今年も落選してしまった東京マラソン。倍率が7倍だったので、今後7年のうちに一度は走れると良いな。
日比谷から銀座にかけて折り返し地点があったので、10km・20km・35kmのところで応援してたら、走る人から笑顔が消えて行く過程が見れて、マラソンは過酷なスポーツだなぁと思いました。
来年こそは走れますように！

I didn't get in Tokyo Marathon this year again. There were 7 times more entries than the position available this year. I just need to keep trying till I get in, maybe next 7 years...
I watched people around Hibiya because there were two turning points of the course. 10km, 20km and 35km, the smile disappeared from runners' faces. Running a full marathon is not that easy, I suppose.
But I hope I could run next year!!!

今日リニューアルオープンの東京都現代美術館へ。ショップのスペースが広くなり、カフェが少しおしゃれな感じになっていました。私のお気に入り図書館はそのままだったので、しっかり読書してきました。
柳澤孝彦さん設計の建物も改めてぶらぶらしてみると、なかなか面白い。木場公園に面している廊下のガラスの内側の壁が太陽の光に反射して光ったり、建物の周りに作品が展示してあったり、というのも、ここにはしょっちゅう来てるのに、今日はじめて発見しました。
池田亮二さんの企画展が4月2日から、ということで楽しみです。

MOT reopened today after refurbishment. The shop space has been extended and the cafe now looks a lot cooler . But I am happy to find out that the library hasn't changed. So I spent a couple of hours reading books as usual.
This museum was designed by Takahiko Yamnagisawa. I come here often but this was my first time to explore around the building. The glass windows facing the Kiba park reflect sunlight and there are some artworks displayed around the building.
"The infinite between zero and one" by Ryoji Ikeda will be on from 2/April. I'm looking forward to visiting again for that.

Ando Gallery

東京都現代美術館の近くのAndo Galleryで開催中のリカルダ・ロッガン展へ。2008年の7月にオープンしていて、ずっと行きたいと思っていたギャラリーで、そんなに広くはないけれど、住宅地の中に突然あらわれる素敵な空間です。
リカルダ・ロッガンの作品は、木々の写真だったんだけれど、明るいところと暗いところの対比が、照明によってさらに強調されて、緑が浮かび上がってくるという迫力のあるものでした。

I finally visited Ando Gallery near MOT. Since its opening in last July, I really wanted to go. The gallery is surrounded by houses, in middle of nowhere, but is a precious little place.
Now the exhibition by Ricarda Roggan is on. His photos of trees are amazing. The contrast between leaves with light and in the shadow made the photos three-dimensional. It was a peaceful exhibition...

根津美術館 / Nezu Museum

現在改装中の根津美術館。今年の10月に完成予定のようですが、工事現場からちらっと建物の外観が見えました。隈研吾さん設計で、日本的な趣きが感じられます。どんな美術館が完成するのか楽しみです。

Nezu Museum in Minami Aoyama is closed because they knocked down the old building and are rebuilding now. It will reopen in October this year. This new building is designed by Kengo Kuma. I was able to check out the exterior of the building and it looks quite Japanese. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it is completed.

DE BEERS GINZA

去年3月にオープンしたデビアスの銀座店。光井純＆アソシエーツ建築設計事務所の設計で、きれいにうねっています。外観はステンレス素材だそうで、人工的なシャイニーな感じ。
伊藤豊雄さんが手掛けたミキモトと同じ並びにあり、建物のデザインの対比が面白いです。

I walked passed the DE BEERS GINZA building, which opened in March last year. It is designed by Jun Mitsui. The surface of the building is made of stainless steel. It looks shiny and artificial.
The Mikimoto building designed by Toyo Ito is a couple of buildings away. It is nice to see the contrast of such a different styles of architecture together.

銀座にまた新しい建物を発見。まだオープンしていないみたいだったけど、これは化粧品会社ピアスの社屋のようです。13階建てとそんなに高くはないけれど、きれいにグネッとなっていて目立っています。
ファサードはアルミとガラスを組み合わせたボックスと、コンクリートとガラスが72段組み合わされていて、85度ねじれているそうです。下から見上げると圧巻。

I found a new interesting building in Ginza. It doesn't seem to be open yet but this is a Ginza office of cosmetic company PIAS. The building is 13-story so not very tall but really stands out.
The facade is made of 72 layers of concrete and glass and boxes combined with aluminum and glass and twisted 85 degrees. When you look up from the bottom of the building, it looks amazing.

札幌芸術の森 / Sapporo Art Park

雪に埋もれた札幌芸術の森。野外美術館では長靴とかんじきをレンタルしてくれるので、雪にも負けず外を散策できます。かんじきは意外と歩きやすくてびっくり。
かなりの数の作品が雪に埋もれて見えなかったけど、これも彫刻とそれが展示される場所の自然なありかた。良かったです。

sapporo Art Park was completely covered with snow. In the Sculpture Garden, visitors can rent Wellington boots and kanjiki, wooden snowshoes, so we were able to walk around the park. The snowshoes were amazingly comfortable.
Many of the sculptures were buried under the snow but it's good to see the nature take its course. I loved this place.

大倉山展望台 / Mt. Okura

札幌西の大倉山展望台へ。スキージャンプの競技者が実際に使うリフトでジャンプ台の上まで上がれ、札幌の街が一望できます。ここは大通りのほぼ延長に位置していて、大通り公園とTVタワーがきれいに見えました。あまり高い所が好きではない私は、上がるのはまだ良かったけど、急な斜面をリフトで降りるのはかなりの恐怖が味わえました。
併設されている札幌ウィンタースポーツミュージアムでは、ゲームセンターにいる感覚でスキージャンプやスピードスケートが体験できます。これが意外と楽しかったです。

Mt. Okura is almost lined up with Odori Park. Visitors can get to the top of the mountain by the lift that is actually used by ski-jumpers. It was OK to go up but going down the steep hill by the lift is really scary for people who hates hight like me.
The Winter Sports Museum at the bottom of the mountain is good fun. There were interactive machines that allow you to try out different types of winter Olympic sports.

さっぽろ雪まつり / Sapporo Snow Festival

かねがね行きたいと思っていたさっぽろ雪まつりへ。今年の東京は暖冬だけれど、やっぱり札幌は寒いです。大通り公園でディスプレイされていた雪像はアニメのキャラクター的なものが多く、意外と商業的だったことにビックリ。でもこの浜松城はすごかったです。

I have been wanting to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival. This year we are having warm winter in Tokyo but it was pretty freezing in Sapporo. In Odori park, middle of Sapporo city, there were displays of snow sculptures but I was surprised how commercial they were. But this Hamamatsu castle was the best of all.

SETRE in Kobe

舞子の浜辺にも素敵な建物が。芦澤竜一さんによるSETREのチャペルは数々の建築の賞を受賞しているようです。このチャペルは見る角度によって表情が変化するんだけれど、正面(？)の大きな窓ガラスには空の色が反射されていてとても美しい。
私が子どもの頃から毎日見てきた海。橋が完成し、人口の砂浜やアウトレットモールができて海岸沿いはずいぶん変わりました。でもこの海と淡路島を見ると、故郷に帰ってきたな〜と思えるのです。

There is a beautiful building on the Maiko coast with the view of Akashi Kaikyo Bridge – SETRE Hotel + Ocean Chapel. This wedding chapel is designed by architect Ryuichi Ashizawa and has won many architectural awards. It looks different depending on the angle. The front big front window reflecting the sky is really beautiful.
This is my hometown and I grew up with this sea. Since I left Kobe, the coast had changed a lot; the big bridge had completed and artificial beach had built. But whenever I see this sea and Awaji Island, I could feel at home.

本福寺 / Honpukuji Temple

淡路島にある本福寺へ初詣。安藤忠雄さん設計で1991年に建てられた水御堂を見てきました。お正月なので人がいっぱいかなぁと思ったけど、さすがへんぴな立地だけあり人の気配はなし。
階段を降りて行くとお堂があり、中はとても厳かな雰囲気です。無機質なコンクリートの壁と朱色の格子のコントラストが鮮やか。建物はこれといって何もない周りの景色と調和していて、美術館や商業施設とは違ったかたちで建築を楽しめます。
淡路島へは明石海峡大橋を通って行くので素晴らしい眺め。でも舞子からのバスは1時間に1本しかないので注意です。バスの通り道には同じく安藤忠雄による淡路夢舞台もあるので途中下車するのもよいかも。

Honpukuji Temple in Awaji Island is designed by Tadao Ando and completed in 1991. I visited there for New Year. I thought it would be busy but thanks to its isolated location, no one was there.
Honpukuji is known as "Water Temple". I went down the staircase and there was a small shrine. The contrast between the concrete wall and cinnabar latticework was beautiful. It is nice to visit place like this to appreciate the architecture.
To get to Awaji Island from the mainland, catch a bus goes over the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which provides amazing views. Yumebutai Conference Centre also designed by Ando is on the island as well so stop there, too.

中銀カプセルタワー / Nakagin Capsule Tower

黒川起章さんによる世界初のカプセル建築、中銀カプセルタワーが完成したのは1972年。この建物は丸い窓のついた140個のカプセルが積み重なってできていて、中には電化製品や家具、オーディオ、ＴＶ、電話までが内装されています。完成当時はカッコイイ都市生活者の住居だったのでは？
首都高をはさんだ向かいに汐留の高層ビルが見えて、超現代的な建物と時代から取り残されたようなカプセルタワーの対比がすごいです。建物の老朽化が激しく、取り壊しが検討されているようですね。本来はカプセルを新しいものと交換できるようにつくられたみたいですが・・・。どんなものにも寿命があって、それは建築も同じな気がしました。

Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kisho Kurokawa, the first Capsule Architecture was built in 1972. 140 capsules completed with appliances and furniture, from audio system to telephone were piled up. You can imagine how cool to live here in 70's.
Now the tower is really old and people are considering about putting it down. It was built to be able to change each capsule to new ones but they haven't been replaced yet. It looks to me that this building had its days.

静岡新聞 / Shizuoka Shimbun

代々木体育館や都庁でおなじみの建築家・丹下健三さんにより1967年に建てられた静岡新聞の東京支社。新橋駅のすぐ近くにあります。何か理由があってこういうかたちをしているのだろうけど、中がどうなっているか気になります。
現代の感覚からいえばあまりかっこよくはない外見ですが、ビルがぽんぽん建て替えられる銀座の一角にモダニズムの建築がぽつんと残っているのは奇跡的なのでは。色んなスタイルの建物が見事にごちゃまぜになっているムチャクチャさが、東京の街の魅力ですね。

Shizuoka Shimbun's Tokyo branch is built in 1967 by architect Kenzo Tange who also designed Yoyogi Gymnasium and Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bldg. It is near Shinbashi station. There must be reason for it but I wonder why this building has unusual shape like this.
I wouldn't say this building looks cool now but it amazing that this Modernism building is still left in Ginza where buildings gets knocked down easily to be renewed. This messiness, the mix of different styles of building makes Tokyo's street interesting!

東京ミッドタウンのデザインハブで開催されていたGOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2008。2008年のグッドデザイン賞の受賞作品が、無印良品の家からヤクルトの容器まで幅広く展示されていました。
自分に必要なものもそうでないものも、世の中にはたくさんのデザインが溢れているけど、同じ使うなら素敵なデザインのプロダクトを選びたいものです。

GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2008 was held at Design Hub at Tokyo Midtown. Products that won Good Design Awards were on the display from Muji House to Yakult bottles.
There are so many products, some you need and some you don't. For what I use, I would like to choose "good" design.

GALLERY MA

ギャラリー・間で開催中の安藤忠雄建築展。パブリックに開放されている建築とは違い、人の家はなかなか見ることができないものですが、今回は安藤さんの原点となった『住吉の長屋』が原寸大で展示されています。『光の教会』の模型もあって「こういう構造になっていたんだ！」と、実際の建物を見るだけでは分からない発見も。
この建物の2階に入っている本屋さんTOTOは、建築系の雑誌のバックナンバーがたくさんストックしてあって良かったです。

Tadao Ando Architecture exhibition is on at GALLERY MA. Unlike buildings that open to the public, private houses are hard to see. In this exhibition, Ando's debut work "Row House in Sumiyoshi" house is shown as a full-scale model. There was a model of "Church of Light" and I could see the shape of the building.
Bookshop TOTO on the 2nd floor of the building has a large stock of architecture magazines. I found a lot of books and magazines I wanted.

Christmas Tree

Conversations with Other Women

ハンス・カノーザ監督の『カンバセーションズ』は、デュアルフレームという左右に2分割された画面でストーリーが展開するという、面白い構成です。サルコジ大統領夫人のカーラ・ブルーニの曲も映画の中で使われていました。
何年ぶりかに再会した元夫婦が一夜を共にする、なんとも切ないお話で、主演のアーロン・エッカートとヘレナ・ボナム＝カーターが素晴らしい。美男美女ではないけれど、なぜか魅力的なのでした。

Conversations with Other Women is directed by Hans Canosa. The whole film is shown in a split screen format. And a song by Carla Bruni is used in the film.
The story is about ex-husband and wife who meet each other again and spent a night together. Leading actors, Aaron Eckhart and Helena Bonham Carter were amazing. They are not particularly good looking but had some charm. I really liked this film!

今日の高尾山の頂上は、渋谷の交差点より人口密度が高かったような気がします。
高尾駅北口からバスで陣馬高原下まで行って登山スタート。そして陣馬山から高尾山までをストイックに歩く「高尾山・陣馬山コース」。トータルで5時間ちょっと歩きました。
陣馬山は普通に歩けたけど、高尾山に近づくにつれて混んできました。高尾山の頂上にはありえないくらいの人がいて、列に並びながら下山しなきゃいけなかったのにはビックリ。トイレにもケーブルカーの乗り場にも、ものすごい数の人が並んでいました。ピンヒールで険しい山道を登っているお姉さんがいて、よく折れなかったなと。
こんなにも大勢の人が登山を楽しんでいるのは良いことだけれど、もっと静かな山を開拓せねばと思った一日でした。

Mt. Takao was more crowded than Shibuya crossing today.
I took a bus from Takao Station to Jinba Kogenshita and started climbing from there. From Mt. Jinba to Mt. Takao, I completed the walk in just over five hours.
Mt. Jinba was busier than usual but walkable. The closer I got Mt. Takao, the more crowded it got. On my way back to the station from the top of Mt. Takao, I had to queue up in line. I saw a girl climbing in stilettos and I was amazed how strong the heels were.
It is good this many people enjoy mountain climbing, but I need to find a quieter mountain...

「第2世代(2G)携帯電話サービスを終了するので携帯買い替えて下さい」葉書が届いたので、3年間使ってきたvodafone携帯を買い替えることに。
なのでiPhone！とても美しく賢い携帯電話で日々感激です。
ただ購入のとき疑問に思ったのが、外国人はビザの残り期間が15ヶ月未満だと、電話機の代金を一括払い（¥78,000くらい）しなきゃいけないこと。毎月使用量から幾らか還元されるので、分割払いでも一括払いでも最終的に支払う合計金額（¥35,000くらい）は同じだそうですが・・・。外国人にとってはなんかヤな感じな料金システムですよね。ただ、iPhoneを使うのが外国人でも、日本人が契約すれば分割でもOKみたいです。こんなややこしい料金システムにしないで、最初に日本人も外国人も一括で最終代金を請求すればいいのでは？と思いました。

So I got an iPhone! It is clever, sophisticated and handsome.
But the iPhone contract is not fair for non-Japanese. If you are non-Japanese and your visa remains less than 15 months, you have to pay approximately ¥78,000 in advance. You get a discount every month so either you pay in installments or the everything in one go, you end up paying about ¥35,000 in total. In my case, I got two iPhone contracts under my name and my husband, whose visa has less than 15 months on it didn't have to pay ¥78,000 in one go.
SoftBank should charge the final fee to everybody. It would be much fairer and less complicated!

ギャリー・フストヴィット監督によるドキュメンタリー映画Helvetica。フォントのHelveticaについて、スイス、ニューヨーク、ドイツなど世界各地のデザイザーさん達があつく語っています。
いろんな場所で目にするフォントだけれど、映画の中でデザイナーの一人が言っていた「ヘルヴェティカは、氷を入れた冷たく透き通った水のようだ」という表現がなんてぴったりくるんだろうと思いました。映像にも音楽にも透明感があって、色んな意味でヘルヴェティカっぽい感じの映画でした。

Helvetica is a documentary film by Gary Hustwit. Designers around the world were interviewed to talk about the typeface "Helvetica".
Today, we see signs and advertisements written in Helvetica everywhere. One of the designers in the film said that Helvetica was like a clear icy glass of water because it is so clean and refreshing. The film itself was very clear and beautiful just like the typeface.

Design Tide Tokyo 2008

東京ミッドタウンホールで開催中のDESIGNTIDE TOKYO。ブースを仕切っている紙が風船で吊るされていて芸が細かい。
ここには渡辺力のスツールをはじめ、デザイン性の高いプロダクトが展示されています。実際に自分の目で見ると、HPでチェックするだけでは感じられないものが発見できて良いです。ブースの空間自体は大きくなかったけど、密度の濃い内容でした。100% designとDESIGNTIDEをチェックして、デザインでいっぱいいっぱいになった一日でした・・・。

DESIGNTIDE TOKYO is held at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi. It is a design fair and very stylish products are exhibited from all over the world. Each booth were divided by the paper wall which were hanging by balloons in tha air.
Riki Watanabe's stool were there. And many of the products were beautifully designed. I could see and feel little details of the products which I can't get from website or photos. I am designed out after 100% design and DESIGNTIDE...

明治神宮外苑で11/3まで開催中のデザインの展示会100% design Tokyoへ。国内外のプロダクトデザイナーさんの作品や商品が展示されています。コルビュジェなどの巨匠によるマスターピースの椅子とランプの展示や、学生による作品展示のスペースなど、いろいろなデザインがあり盛りだくさんでした。

100% design Tokyo is on till 3rd/Nov at Meiji Jingu Gaien. Product designers from Japan and overseas are exhibiting their work. There is some space for design master pieces such as Corbusier's chair and Isamu Noguchi's lamp. Students were also showing their projects. It was good mix of all kind of product design.

Louis Vuitton at Comme des Garçons

青山・骨董通りに12月14日まで期間限定でオープン中のLouis Vuitton at Comme des Garçons。偶然通りがかったので中に入りました。壁に取り付けられたモノグラム柄の箱に穴が開いていて、バッグがその中にディスプレイされているのは、箱からティッシュを取り出すようで面白い。
2階にはヴィトンのオーダーメイドのトラベルケ-スが展示されていて感動。トランクの中がクローゼットになっていたり、簡易ベッドが出てきたりと、初めて実物を見たけどすごい！

Louis Vuitton at Comme des Garçons shop is open in Kotto-dori, Aoyama till December 14th. The monogram patterned boxes are attached on the wall and some bags are displayed in it. It is just like tissue boxes, you can take bag from the hall.
On the second floor, Louis Vuitton's custom made travel trunks such as the bed trunk are displayed. . This was my first time to see these trunks in real life and they are quite amazing.

Tod's 表参道

伊藤豊雄によるトッズ表参道ビルの後ろ側も、建物が取り壊されています。表参道側からだと、冬を除いてはケヤキの木に隠れてあまり見えないので、こんなに広い面積の表面が見えるのはラッキーです。
Tod's 表参道は木の枝のかたちをしたコンクリートの外壁が建物全体を支える構造になっているため、内部には柱を必要としないそうです。建物の中も外壁のパターンを引用したデザインで、鏡も長方形ではなくいびつな四角形で面白い。

The area behind of the Tod's Omotesando designed by Toyo Ito is demolished. From Omotesando street, we can't see much of the building because it is covered by trees so it is lucky to see this much of it.
Tod's Omotesando is supported by the concrete wall so there aren't pillars inside. The interior is similar to the surface of the building, irregularly shaped.

PRADA 南青山

ヘルツォーク＆ド・ムーロンによるデザインのプラダ・ブティック南青山。今、その裏の建物が取り壊されているため、後ろ側から見ることができます。
入口側のようにガラスに凹凸がないためか、建物の中が良く見えます。屋根がとがった形をしているのも意外。今まで表からしか見たことがなかったけど、裏側から見るといつもと違う建物の表情が見れて面白いです。

Prada Boutique in Minami Aoyama is designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Now, a building behind the boutique has been taken down and we can see Prada from the back.
The surface of the building is flat on the back so we can see thorough inside more than from the front. I didn't expect the roof to be this pointy shape. We haven't had much chance to see the back of the building before, so it was nice to find something new about it.

彫刻の森美術館 / Hakone Open-Air Museum

箱根彫刻の森美術館には、ピカソ、ヘンリー・ムーア、ミロなどなど色んなアーティストの彫刻が、これでもか！というくらい野外に展示されています。約100点もあるそうなので、全部チェックしようと思ったら見つけるのが大変。
こんなにたくさんの彫刻を一度に観たことが今までなかったけれど、森の中で観る彫刻はダイナミック。美術館のような室内だとちっちゃくまとまってしまったり、街だと周りの景色に埋もれてしまったりするけれど、ここは本当に素晴らしい！

About 100 sculptures are shown in The Hakone Open-Air Museum: Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Joan Miro and many others. I've never seen this many sculptures at the same time.
This open-air museum, set in the mountains, is amazing. Sculptures usually look hemmed in inside a museum or they can blend into the scenery too much when they are placed on the street. But this place provides the perfect setting!

ポーラ美術館 / Pola Museum Of Art

新宿からバスで2時間、遠路はるばる箱根にあるポーラ美術館へ。今日はちょうどシャガール展の最終週でした。牡牛や馬などの動物やサーカス、シャガールの生まれ故郷の街を題材にした絵や、聖書のモーセの十戒の話の絵本など、シャガールの世界にどっぷり浸かりました。
シャガールも良かったけれど、19世紀以降の絵画の流れをおさらいできる常設展や、江戸から明治時代の女性の髪型や化粧の様子を浮世絵から見る展示もあって、どれもこれも面白かったです。

I went to the Pola Museum Of Art in Hakone, a 2 hour bus ride from Shinjuku. Today was the last week of a Chagall exhibition. There are some paintings about bulls, circuses and his hometown. And some picture books based on the bible were also shown.
The Chagall exhibition was good but the permanent exhibition on the history of painting since the 19th century was amazing. They also show an Ukiyo-e collection of Japanese fashion from the Edo era (1603-1867) to the Meiji era (1868-1912). There was a lot to see.
